NYC Photo Journal: Sunday in LIC (Long Island City)
The Long Island City Flea and Food market has opened. A nosher’s paradise. Not far from the “water” (the East River) and Gantry State Park. The place was jammed with unique and delicious stuff. This is just a small sample; I was too hungry to run around and photograph food, especially since the line for the squiggly potatoes and other strangely cut stuff was forty-five minutes long.
More…on to the park, the East river, the breeze, the expensive new apartments we’ll never be able to afford. LIC may be the new Brooklyn which is the new Manhattan. Check out the iconic images:
- the United Nations building
- the Empire State Building
- the Chrysler Building
- Stuyvesant Town/Peter Cooper Village
- the old Pepsi Cola sign
- find the Freedom Tower
The area that is now so built up and modern was an old waterfront industrial area. The Pepsi sign is a landmark from the 1930’s. It was taken from atop of the building where Pepsi was bottled. Further up the river was the Silvercup bakery. That sign is preserved as well and sits atop a landmark building, the Silvercup Studios, which is now known for the production of television shows and cinema.
Gantry State Park got its name from the gantries that stand at the waterfront which helped the boats come close to the shore to load and unload their goods.

wow, I am so envious!
Typical NY kinda stuff, Joyce. There is just not enough days in the year to do a quarter of it!
Wow! I would’ve loved to have tried those French crepes! Fabulous photography, especially the shots of Stuyvesant town. Brings back memories, doesn’t it? I would like to go sometime. I hope you had a great day!
