236. CreaARTive Sunday: 5/17/08: Collection: Dichroic Glass Jewelry Part 1
I have been collecting dichroic glass jewelry for at least 12 years. It is a real attention getter; whenever I wear it, strangers walk up to me and ask what it is. It has a smooth glass surface and embedded in it are many layers of metallics that diffuse light differently creating a shimmering effect and color change when viewed from different angles.
You can read more about it at Laurita’s post here.
My first purchases were from the KROMA studio, located in New Mexico, but their beautiful pieces can be found in art shops all over the country. A husband and wife team developed dichroic glass for jewelry, beginning in the 1960’s. Murray, from what I recall, worked at NASA, and the glass was used as rocket insulation. It is explained here.
His wife, Rumpama, has made the most beautiful creations. I have been amassing pieces from Kroma Glass, and also from other places, but no one makes it like Kroma. I wear it mostly in the summer; it looks light, fresh, colorful, and unique. The depth of color, the color-changing effect and the patterns give the pieces an “other-worldy” quality, yet somehow retro-modern.
Here’s why…
This unique pendant reminded me of the city~
there’s a “building”
on the side
(1/2″x3/4″)
I put it on a chain and wear it with…
this gorgeous trio, that is actually on the same chain looped around twice so it looks like 2 necklaces.
(7/16″x10/16″ incl. bale)
more to come…
The website is no longer showing stock, I am not sure why, but there are things to read:

AAAhhhhh … there we are … wow and nice all at the same time. These are very pretty and I can see the side of the building you described in the one. The colors are swirling with a huge effect. I’m not one to have knowledge of stuff like this, but I know what attracts me and what doesn’t. These items do.

Like I said, they are fascinating. They seem to have a glow in certain light because of the layers, the designs have a 3D effect. People just gravitate to me when I wear them.

Your best post ! (I know I keep saying that !). Did the two pieces you gave me come from KROMA ? I love how each piece is so unique ! They remind me of Chagall stained glass.

I wish you could see the shimmer and the color change; the camera flattens out the layers, but seen from angles the colors change.

Is that an enamelled backing? The glass is bezel set in silver, no enamel.

I have some pieces I bought to make jewelry with, but have yet to produce anything with them because I can’t bear to part with them. It’s like capturing chips off a rainbow and wearing them. Beautiful! That’s why I’ll never be rich!!
