298. NYC: Part 1. Brooklyn: Saturday photo album, 9/20/08
Part 1
We started at The Orchard, located at 1367 Coney Island Avenue, because we “follow” the produce. The Orchard is an unusual fruit store in that it carries the finest and most unusual of produce.
When the New York Times says that The Orchard is the only store that will carry the rare Indian Blood peach, we go!
These peaches are available for 3 weeks…
Part of the store’s caché is that owner, Mitchell, insists that the customer taste each fabulous fruit. That closes the deal. No place has anything juicier or sweeter–or more unique. The gentleman below is about to slice up a mango for sampling, one of the best we’ve ever had. It’s cousin is now on my counter.
Enjoy the view…

You can get fruit on almost any corner in NYC but not like this. It’s a splurge of perfection. Ever hear of butter pears? We bought a moderate shopping bag full and left with treasures but were almost $60 lighter! They had unbelievable “raspberry figs” that were so big, sweet, and juicy. Of course they want you to try it and it is such a treat.

Glad you have a place that outdoes Berkeley Bowl for its fresh and inexpensive produce. If you ever come to California you must see the place. Teena, fresh-yes. Inexpensive-NO!! We have wall to wall produce stores all over the city but NOTHING with this quality. The Orchard brings in the most unique varieties, some available for a week or two. We literally amke a pilgrimage there–but first to the bank. It’s a treat.!
