9. Life is a Journey, But This is a Trip: Reflections on Oils and Meds
The Aimovig monthly, self-injection
I just wanted to catch you up on the oil/migraine/Aimovig journey in hopes that it might help someone out there. I have been taking the Aimovig shot once/monthly since last July and have had NONE of those terrible migraine vertigo episodes since. For the most part, any “pain” headaches have been manageable and I have not had to take anything like Advil, or, the prescribed Imitrex until recently. I had played around with the CBD oil dosages in my effort to see what was controlling what: was the Aimovig working better than I thought or was it the CBD? In cutting back over a month and dosing as needed, I found I was getting more episodes. That was telling: So, back to more oil.
I am having 5 to 8 ocular (visual) migraines monthly. In the past I would often have several during an hour or repeat episodes during the day: That has pretty much stopped. Once I began taking the oil I could, if taken at the right time, curtail an episode, but invariably it would occur later. This tells me that the brain needs to discharge this energy. And, I began to see patterns of occular episodes occurring two days in a row. I also noticed that the episodes would present more toward the end of the month, two weeks before the next Aimovig dose, as if it were wearing off. Is my current dose enough? Is there a higher dose?
Every three months I visit my “headache doctor/neurologist” and I learned that it could very well be that I need a higher dose and the company is coming out with it shortly. I am going to try that. “Five to eight episodes a month is good but not good enough,” he said.
Other exciting news is that a California University just got a grant to study migraine and CBD oil. That makes me very hopeful, as they will likely come up with a lot of info that is needed, especially the type of oils, and dosing. I just hope that Big Pharma doesn’t poke their nose in.
And very interesting for me: the other day I could tell an ocular episode had begun. It takes an hour or so to get an oil into the system, vaping is more direct. I was already into the event and once beyond that point, the brain spasm is well on its way for a half hour. This time I took a higher dose of oil (CBD Living, 500 mg bottle, 1 dropperful) and I grabbed a new, higher dose CW vape, took several vapes and NO MORE OCULAR. That was the first time ever I could stop it while it was in full swing.
Mind you, if I am in a public place, things are different. Vaping might not be permitted, you can’t even vape in a bathroom. So it is touch and go depending on the situation. However, this was a very heartening moment.
The feeling of control is a feeling of power. The grant to study this further makes me even more hopeful and validated. And, the fact that there is a grant indicates that CBD has credibility.

So glad you’re finally starting to get results!
As far as vaping when you’re out, I would just do it. If you have to, step outside for a minute. Why should you be in pain??!!
Sue, I am VERY happy for you! It sounds like, you are definitely, on the right track! Keep up the good work!
This is great news!! Only eight!!! Wow!! And how you stopped it midstream!! Fabulous!! May you continue to have good results!!
I started cbd oil a month ago and some of my edema left. Some of my pain too. And I’m using a cream. I am using the select at 1000mg. If I have a bad day I take more than a stopper full. Tho I feel like I’m sliding backwards this week… but that may be more weather related
Such wonderful news! I am so happy for you. I have been fortunate to find kratom and CBD oil. They have helped me tremendously. The government is trying to take kratom away but we won’t let them! And Big Pharma needs to butt out too!
