My little Princess Blue

This morning we picked up Princess Blue from the vet. She has been languishing in the bottom of a cage for weeks. She has been spayed, inoculated and found to have a cancerous mammary tumor which was removed; in short, she’s been through a lot. She has also been found to be FIV+, the equivalent of  HIV, however, cats are able to live with the virus for many years.

We drove fifty miles out to the animal sanctuary that one of my cat rescue friends was nice enough to help us get into. Chris Arnault is a dear, dear man. He has dedicated his life since the untimely death of his twenty-four year old son a few years ago to saving cats that are ill, abused, who have lost their owners or have special needs. He has made his entire house a safe haven for these animals. You can see photos and video here: The Happy Cat Sanctuary.  

This is one good cause to support if you are an animal lover. This man is running out of money and needs donations.

Upon visiting we find several outdoor areas that are clean and well tended. The cats look happy and healthy; many came up to greet us and several followed us and did the official greeting leg rub. I have never seen so many beautiful and unusual animals: there are about two hundred and eighty-five. Volunteers come in to clean and feed. I could see that Chris is a genuine, caring, observant person who is patient and kind. The FIV+ cats stay in HIS room so they don’t mingle with the non-FIV’s.

We brought Princess Blue in in her carrier. He turned the door of it to the wall and opened it. “She’s going to run and hide,” he said. And that is what she did. It will take time and hopefully she will make some friends. No more trudging over ice in the winter and freezing outside, not more hot dehydrating days. No more litters, just rest. I said goodbye and told her I loved her. Cancer is known to reoccur in cats who have had tumors. I wish her well. If she needs us we are still here to help.

And so it goes full circle: one litter of many, many, I am sure, has been rescued and now the mother has a home.
