NYC Photo Journal: The Brooklyn Museum: Designs by Jean Paul Gaultier
Gaultier with Madonna He dressed her for several tours
You might say his career began after he dressed his Teddy bear in a cone bra
An amazing exhibit of fashion that is more costume and theater than haute couture, in my humble opinion. Gaultier, like so many of us, were influenced by a childhood event. He saw showgirls at the Follies Bregeres and was mesmerized, if not titillated by the costumes and lack of thereof. He was obsessed with the experience and began to doodle designs while in class. He got his knuckles rapped with a ruler for drawing a gal in fishnet stockings. Perhaps the pleasure and pain set him on a course for life. He designed magnificent ethnic inspired outfits and outrageous garments. His lifetime of work filled room after room.
Spotted were dresses worn by Sarah Jessica Parker and Beyoncé.
The exhibit was magnificent and strange: Manikins were beyond life-like; their faces were projected onto blank visages and they spoke and recited and sang. It was beautiful if not creepy.
The music and chatter you hear in the videos are the recorded voices of the models, and of Gaultier, himself. If you look closely you will see the facial movements; they are projected onto the figures. The videos follow the photography.
Thank you for the beautiful pictures of the Jean Gaultier exhibit. I really enjoyed seeing them!
This exhibit looks awesome. I agree the outfits look more like costumes than haute couture, but Madonna would probably disagree with us! Who was it that was singing in the video? Spooky!

It reminds me of the Hall Of Presidents exhibit at Disney World!
Actually, this technology is similar to what they used at The Haunted Mansion. The Hall Of Presidents actually used robots not facial projections.
