310. Week end Photo Journal: Part 2 Long island City: on the waterfront
Long Island City is an area of Queens that is in the process of gentrification. Once fairly run-down, this area on the East River is now a goldmine. It is a transit hub; the subway and the Long Island Railroad stop there, just built luxury condos and rentals are sprouting up all over. I thought this was a recession; apparently not here in NYC.
And then there is the view. Nothing like it.
The Pepsi-Cola sign is a landmark (I am behind it. See middle image below).
Look for the 59th Street Bridge beyond ( Second row, third image from left). Feelin’ Groovy, yet?

If you are reading this blog, I thank you. I, a cancer survivor, am still here. Please join me on my journey. You’ll learn a lot about me and about cancer along the way. Each day I am activating another link to a post. There is much information. Be well. Stay well. Be informed. A mammogram saved my life. you don’t know me but my mother died of breast cancer-horribly. We need to get the message out to really make women aware it is survivable if you just get to the doctor-most times. I ran in the race for the cure today and it is a very emotional things to do and to see. Thank you for putting yourself out there for us all to see

Photographer’s nightmare photographing New York. Converging verticals no matter how you approach it unless you have a rising front. I only have a vague idea what a Condo is so I am guessing multiple apartments with a common service corridor? It looks like the streets are wind tunnels.

Hi Bill-well NY is hard to photograph, but so exciting and even more so to figure out how. Condos, short for condominium, is an apartment or perhaps a townhome where you buy and not rent. Common areas are taken care of from ownership fees. Co-operatives are usually apartments where you buy shares in a corporation when purchasing an apt-common grounds taken care of, technically you own the stock, not the apt. Both are subject to a Board of Director’s and are governed by set rules and regs.
Yes these streets are wind tunnels and the buildings are just becoming occupied. Probably thousands of dollars for monthly rent. For Manhattan workers they are so convenient. You can get an idea of how huge these structures are. |

The rentals in these buildings are probably $3,000/month. I don’t know where all the money comes from and who can afford to live in this city! |

Is photo 11 on the way to take boats to Miss Liberty ? No, this is Queens, the Liberty boats leave from lower Manhattan. NY is finally making better use of the waterfront. Remember that we are not only Manhattan but 4 other “boroughs” whose borders are are water. This area in the photos was largely run-down and industrial and has become classy residential. I can’t imagine what the rents are.
