74. Series: Part 12: Spending Time With The Nanny
Fran Drescher,
creator and star of the tv sitcom,
The Nanny
will be the keynote speaker at the
Cancer Survivors’ Day Celebration
(2007)
Tomorrow I will be spending several hours at a Cancer Survivors’ Celebration, and I am looking forward to it, as Fran Drescher will be the keynote speaker. Fran is a Flushing, New York native who created and starred in the series The Nanny. I watched the series faithfully over the years that it was on; it was hilarious, adorably cute, sexy, precious, and charming. She was a modern day Lucille Ball playing Cinderella and it spoke to me. She was a survivor.
She had the hutzpa (yiddish for balls, pronounced with a throat clearing initial ch sound) to dream and realize it. She put herself out there, made her connections, her stars lined up and she ended up with a notably popular television series which she created with her High School sweetheart husband, Peter Jacobson. She appeared in:
Movies
- Saturday Night Fever (1977)
- American Hot Wax (1978)
- Gorp (1980)
- The Hollywood Knights (1980)
- Ragtime (1981)
- Doctor Detroit (1983)
- The Rosebud Beach Hotel (1984)

- Law and Order: Criminal Intent (1 episode, “The War at Home”) (2006)
- Thank God You’re Here (US version) (2007)
But being famous doesn’t prevent illness or grief: Fran survived a sexual assault, a divorce, and then uterine cancer in 2000, 4 years before I was diagnosed with breast cancer. The shock and recovery from cancer is not easy, but Fran’s videos helped me laugh, and we all know that laughter helps. And I am going to tell her that when I meet her.
So, tomorrow I will be spending some time with The Nanny. And next week starts a series of follow up medical appointments for me; please keep your fingers and eyes crossed that the results I receive will make me a 3 year survivor.
See you tomorrow, Miss Fine!

OMG, you are going to meet her???? I LOVE her!!! The Nanny was on a couple of years ago in reruns, and my friends and I couldn’t miss it. She is so talented, and that may be one of the funniest shows ever. I don’t think I’ve seen them all yet, but I want to. I can’t believe you are going to meet her, that’s so amazing!!! She is brilliant! I’d say give her my regards, but of course she would have no clue who I am! She was in Saturday Night Fever?
I didn’t know that about her personal history. That makes me admire her even more. I hope you have a wonderful time tomorrow. And, as for next week, everything possible is crossed, and lots of prayers too. I have faith and look forward to hearing your good news. Big hugs my friend!

She’s a character, all right — glad that you’ll be able to spend some time with her, albeit briefly.
Thanks for this post!

The sitcom was hilarious but I could never get past that unique, nasal sound of hers. 😉 Fran, the person though, I remember seeing on what was probably a late night talk show after her recovery from cancer and she touched my heart in so many ways. I remember her mentioning that she, obviously, would never be able to have a child and her sadness resulting from it.
You have yourself a wonderful time tomorrow.
I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers and hope all goes well at the follow-up visit to your oncologist.
Big hugs!!

This was an absolutely Wonderful Post. I live with my sister, A Lung Cancer Survivor. I get my strength from her. She has an incredible way about her and counsels to some extent other individuals who are suffering. She runs Marathons every year with the Wellness Community and has been spotlighted and interviewed in the new book that the Wellness Community publishes. Recently she participated in the Marathon in Eureka, Ca. The people I have met that go through this are inspirational.

I love The Nanny’s TV series. Always put me in a relax mood. And I’ve watched some of her movies. She got a low voice for a woman, but her body has a killer curves and shapes. She’ll always be one of my faves. (^O^)v
