Angels Among Us
We have been confined for three months of quarantine and my husband decided that he had to get a haircut. Mind you, he has neurological issues and very poor balance, he has lost a lot of muscle weight and his gait is unsteady. He has not been out alone nor has he driven in three months. In my mind he should not have gone out. But he is stubborn and overestimates his abilities. I was busy dealing with the issues with my mother.
He went for a haircut, in this new world order of masks and gloves and lines. Then he decided to drive and do food shopping. A ton of stuff was loaded into the car by a worker. He realized he forgot his glasses at the barber shop. Went back. Hours have gone by without adequate food, water, his meds: Try to tell him that. He attempted to return to the car and collapsed on the pavement. Muscle fatigue? A faint? He has a cut on his arm and on his face near his eye, a black and blue cheekbone. The owner of the pizza shop ran out with water and cold towels—did I mention it was also very hot and he had nothing to drink but a sip of juice at breakfast, his usual routine with a bite of cake?
Out of the ether came TWO young men who picked him up and drove him home, one drove our car and the other drove his. TWO YOUNG MEN WHO DIDN’T KNOW MY HUSBAND OR ONE ANOTHER. Both, gorgeous six-footers, both immigrants or children of. They appeared at the door with my husband who had been gone for too many hours, who could barely stand, they delivered him and put him in a chair. One unloaded the car. One texted Target for a Pedialyte order through Instacart and refused to take money.
They both said that we were in this together. That they were grateful to this country. The Korean young man had been in the Army, in Afghanistan. You paid my salary. I am an orphan, I live with my grandma.
Sherif and Dustin didn’t miss a beat. They stepped up and in and did a beautiful thing.
They took our number and I took theirs. They want to call and find out how my husband was. But I have a feeling it was more than that. We had a connection through a strange, unfortunate event which I feel will forever bind us. The bind is goodness. Kindness. Caring. It reinforces the inherent nature of man, and the generosity of New Yorkers.
And the feeling that there truly are angels among us.
I am another one. with tears in my eyes!
This is the kind of stories we need to hear on the news instead of all the negativity… Angels are among us. Love and Hugs.
This story was long needed. Bravi tutti and a special well wish to Robert. May he take better care of himself and not create further worries to his loving wife
They were at the right place at the right time God bless everyone involved.
I am sorry to read this but uplifted by the generousity of complete strangers. Love and kindness is not dead by any means.
Touching story. Immigrants are angels. They are our sisters and brothers!
I’m so sorry that Robert’s outing included falling and injury – I am uplifted by the rest of the story. Maybe the world around us isn’t disintegrating the way it has seemed these last 3 1/2 years, but particularly since March. This is a tale of hope and I am going to co-opt it for myself to get through some of the despair.
Your fortitude amazes me.
Powerful and poignant! I so love reading your stories, Sue. ♥️
Tears in my eyes too. Reminds me of the CA doctor that wants to stay in touch and see how your mom is doing. Now more than ever, we need stories like this. Bless those two young men.
Keep looking for the angels …
