Go With The Flow: S T R E A M I N G
Up until very recently, I never had a taste of media streaming. Cold, fresh water was what streaming meant to me. Nature. Certainly not media. It seems that many folks are looking into cutting the cord and ditching cable companies. I get it: it took me years to cede to PAY for TV, and the “triple play,” and then you turn around and you are the puppet of the cable company. At least they threw in HBO (works for me) and Showtime (rarely watch it). The fact is there is less and less well-made stuff to watch. There are several “standards” … Continue reading →

Something to think about … parallel lives. A too big topic for the mind. The review of the play I had seen recently, about this subject is here. Parallel worlds exist and interact with our world, say physicists New theory explains many of the bizarre observations made in quantum mechanics. http://www.mnn.com/green-tech/research-innovations/stories/parallel-worlds-exist-and-interact-with-our-world-say#ixzz3PwezxnVX Next, think about this … ask your aunt Sadie to smile for the camera. Friday Fluff: Are Some Things Meant to Be? The Bashert Factor
Is it serendipity? Telepathy? Coincidence? I often have, as I am sure you do, situations where it’s gotta be more than a coincidence … you run into someone you were just thinking about, a letter arrives, an email, a call from someone who has been on your mind … Last night I heard from someone I had contacted months ago and left a message. The call was returned last night, a few hours after a holiday card was mailed to her saying: I called and left a message, I hope you are well. I knew in my heart of hearts … Continue reading →
Be Happy, Or At Least Pretend To Be
Years ago when I was on a teaching sabbatical I was walking through Manhattan to a class. I remember crossing a street near The New School. It was around noon. I was wearing a gorgeous sweater I made under a red coat. It was early Winter, somewhat cloudy and I remember the chill. It was about twenty-eight years ago. I was pregnant with my son. A young man approached me and said something like, “you look happy, would you like to get a cup of coffee?” He likely approached me because I was smiling. I often smile to myself when … Continue reading →
Sign Of The Times
My past, my students. Teachers will understand, teachers of the deaf will understand better. I came across an article in today’s The New York Times. In the 1980’s I taught in a program for the deaf at The High School of Fashion Industries in Manhattan. I recognized faces in this article. Faces of former students who at that time were learning a trade along with academics. At graduation they were 21 years old. I was in my 30’s. I see at least one of my former students in a photo of the choir and the video. The woman in the … Continue reading →
NYC Photo Journal: Halloween 2014: Rob and Dorit Thereminize at Joe’s Pub
Joe’s Pub is a nightclub/bar/theater venue for New Yorkers of all ages. Halloween night is special: out come the theremins for a little spookiness to add to your dinner. Meanwhile, outside, and a few blocks down, you have the world renown Halloween parade, and chances are while walking the streets you’ll see a lot of fake blood and some very interesting costumes. If they are costumes. After all, this is the Village. (Greenwich Village) Meanwhile, inside, the usually great burgers are being served (it was a busy night and many orders were incorrect), but (cousin) Rob Schwimmer and Dorit … Continue reading →

Kicking Migraine’s Ass
I’ve been at war with migraine headaches of all kinds and have been trying everything I can to win. The neurologist injected me with six vials of Botox in my head, shoulders and neck; that’s three large hypodermics. And I was still getting ocular migraines. I have been going for acupuncture twice weekly, I took two week’s worth of Chinese herbs which I deemed my daily dirt martinis. The headaches persisted. I was getting head “aches” with pain and the persistent, pit bull headaches of the not painful ocular migraines which usually leave in thirty minutes. Sometimes they would come … Continue reading →
Part 75: Life in Cartoons
There is no better cartoonist that Roz Chast, whose venue is The New Yorker Magazine. (Please make sure you click the blue links) Her book, Can’t We Talk About Something More Pleasant? is her pure genius chronicle of her elderly parents’ final year; what they went through, what she went through. I read it in a few hours and began to read it again, I just didn’t want the story to end; I laughed and then cried. There is no better illustration of comic tragedy or tragic comedy. It is the example in literature of making light in the face of … Continue reading →

My parents were original tenants in Stuyvesant Town, in lower Manhattan. It was developed to help alleviate the housing shortage after the end of WW II. When I first heard about “Phone Phreaking” I was in the car. It was about two months ago and I was mesmerized by an NPR program. Phone Phreaking was a 1960’s phenomenon that continued into later years. It was a cult, an in-club for a select group of young folks, mainly, to commune from afar and break the law by hacking the phone. These were teens, outlaws, misfits, techies, the nerds of yesterday gone wild, invading the secrets of mass communication and learning a language that only machines could speak. It was true to the times, it was The Who’s … Continue reading →
Part 69: Who’s Who?
I have been putting off writing the latest addition to my mother-daughter series for several reasons: I have been really tired if not drained, I have been fighting those ocular migraines which have been coming in groups, like one episode a day isn’t enough, I have been busy running around, and at times I am just plain daunted. I have: taken my mother to apply for all kinds of changes at social security taken her to apply for a NYS photo ID gotten applications for all kinds of services spent hours on the phone with the social worker gotten her … Continue reading →
