  Just an update. Honestly, I never thought I’d be doing so many cat posts. I mean enough already. But the peculiar thing is that since Play’s major issue and subsequent surgery, the other two cats have been following with their own stuff. I thought by now I’d be back in poetry mode but I continue to be pulled back into kitty reports.     Caramel has taken her third pill for that strange limp. The Year Of The Cat

Ampersand and his mother, Caramel A year ago I had rescued four kittens and their mother before hurricane Sandy. After a few months I was able to get the babies adopted. I trapped the mother and had her spayed. She was found to have cancer, was surgically treated and stayed at the vet until I could find a sanctuary that would take her–for a fee. My own rescues from 2004 were not a problem but as they aged their systems began changing: Play Up until now, kitty issues have been about Play.   PS 1 is one of the oldest public school buildings in New York City, from the late 1800’s It was underutilized and became an art center in 1971, founded by Alanna Heiss. Classrooms became studios. Gradually there were exhibitions and performance art. PS 1 (public studios 1) was incorporated into the Museum of Modern Art in 2000. Mike Kelley (1954-2012), born in Detroit, lived and worked in Los Angeles from the mid-1970’s until he died at age fifty-seven of suicide.   Ampersand was fine and then he wasn’t, just like that. He is eating and doing everything normally but about a week ago one eye started running. No symptoms of a respiratory problem, no other cats sick. I thought that his mom might have bopped him in the eye. The, junk began to appear. Gradually it began to look better but then the other eye started to do the same thing. Well Kitty At Home: The First Few Days

    Since Tuedsay night, Play has spent many hours in isolation; hiding in closets where it is dark and quiet. I’ve been pulling him out of a box in my closet and letting him curl up on a blanket on a down comforter on the bed where he rests for hours and is happy to greet visitors. I left a bowl of water and a litter box nearby should he need them. I haven’t seen him drink which is likely a good sign as his insulin dose has been lowered. The newly renovated Queens Museum is dazzling. This is the original site of the United Nations, it is the last remaining building of the 1939 World’s Fair which housed a skating rink in the basement and still houses the massive amazing New York City Panorama. The view from the Flushing Meadow Park side is the Unisphere, the symbol of the 1964 World’s Fair.   Click on photos to enlarge. Well Kitty Update 17: 12/3/13: He’s Home But Where’d He Go?

He’s home, yes, home. Here’s how today’s visit went. The usual late afternoon arrival and visits to the gang in the back room. The kitties come and go, some get adopted, some wait for years for a home. I was amazed that this vet has taken in so many animals over the years. The cat that had the leg amputation yesterday is likely going home tomorrow. Ampersand was released on Saturday   I had a long wait to get in to see Play today. The operating room was busy and the patients were being brought in to the cages around him: a small dog had an eye issue and was barking and thrashing and beating his head against the cage floor trying to get the cone off; a huge red eyed bull dog was under Play making a barking racket. Ampersand, Play’s brother and litter mate, has tummy troubles Ampersand has not been back to a vet since he was a kitten. He’s been healthy all these nine years, but seems to have a familial problem of intestinal blockage. Imagine: he has never been held, picked up, weighed. He is huge and very shy so we just let him be and he comes around in his own time. The vets were able to handle him with no problem. Might he “graduate after a month stay in the animal hospital? Well, folks, the improvement has been considerably more noticeable the last few days. Today one of the vet techs was tickled by our boy’s playful talkativness. I tried to catch a few instances on video. He chattered, grabbed my hand, tapped me on the face, purred, moved. I had the technician put a small litter pan in the cage for him to get used to using. After the talk of possible discharge today and about how well Play was doing, there appears to have been a change of heart. In my humble opinion, his eyes still look inflamed, he needs to use a litter box but that is not available until everything heals. The stitches were removed today and I suppose that makes him a bit vulnerable to bumps or infection. He might need to stay another week, according to the tech.   Nope, not ready to go home. Though Play looked much better than ever yesterday and the talk was of releasing him, there seems to be one vet pushing for him to leave and the older vet not. I am with the older vet. Yesterday the cat was lying in urine, I saw he was wet when he turned over to greet me. Mind you, he hasn’t used a litter box in three weeks because it could cause infection, and there was some poop on his foot. He has to be watched. Better A visit yesterday: We caught the poor cone-head guy snoozing. As soon as he heard the treat packages opening he was up. His eyes were much less inflamed, his hind scar had shrunk. There was a lot of patting and purring going on. And two more kittens are available for adoption.   The vets are still talking about release tomorrow. I am still hesitating.

  Play is still healing. I am still concerned about the eye infection which I think is a virus as it is not clearing up with antibiotics. The last time he came home from a stay at the vet he had a cold and got the other kitties ill–I can’t let that happen again. Going to be cautious. If need be I’ll let him stay until after Thanksgiving when things will be quiet and I’ll be able to focus on him.     Another day, another visit. Play appears to be at home with the barking dogs and sick buddies around him. He still has an eye infection but it has cleared up considerably. It’s a waiting game: He can’t use a litter box because his wound is still open. He just sits and hangs out. His once silky fur has not been groomed and is matted in spots. Loves a scritch Several of the homeless kitties were adopted. A little shaky, barking, crying, upset Chihuahua was admitted and is Play’s new neighbor.     The remaining kitties across the way were taking naps or hiding under towels.     Play was eating when I came in. This was the first time I saw him stand. He tried to walk a step or two.   I stayed with him for a good half hour and kept him purring. He even tried to clean himself but didn’t get far. Play went to the vet three weeks ago on October 25th.  The following Tuesday his right hind leg was amputated. Healing has been hampered by diabetes. The first week there was virtually no healing due to constant draining. Bandages were since removed to let the air help. There is now a huge scab. Play sits by the cool wall. Yesterday there was no IV; because of the way he sits, it was not functioning properly. He had just had an eye medication administered. Play has been at the vet for twenty days. It is 2 weeks past his surgery and he still has healing issues and now conjunctivitis. I think he is resigned to his new temporary home. The doesn’t fight the cone or the IV and today he sat quietly against the side of his cage. He is healing very slowly due to the diabetes.
