Poetry Wednesday: World Refugee Day

Cerebral Jukebox Magazine Posted on June 20, 2018 by Sans SouciJune 20, 2018

From the Kenyan-born Somali poet Warsan Shire: no one leaves home unless home is the mouth of a shark you only run for the border when you see the whole city running as well your neighbors running faster than you breath bloody in their throats the boy you went to school with who kissed you dizzy behind the old tin factory is holding a gun bigger than his body you only leave home when home won’t let you stay. no one leaves home unless home chases you fire under feet hot blood in your belly it’s not something you … Continue reading →

Saturday Rant: Something is Rotten in the State of …

Brazil’s Largest Food Companies Raided in Tainted Meat Scandal Read about it here.     We are all connected… As the world turns. Should we be surprised by corruption in the Brazilian meat-packing industry? We’ve seen it here ourselves many years ago when Upton Sinclair’s book revealed the industry’s atrocities and shocked us into new federal food safety laws. The sad thing is that the tainted meat in Brazil was destined to be the lunches of school children. But, take a look…China and their scandals, some of which include lead paint in toys, melamine poisoned milk and baby formula… … Continue reading →

Nights of Broken Glass

Cerebral Jukebox Magazine Posted on January 15, 2017 by Sans SouciFebruary 7, 2017

Sometimes I lose track of hours, of days. I am scattered in my focus dealing with household issues, elderly parent issues and paperwork. I step back and find I have taken little time for myself. There are days when I don’t even leave the house, let alone get dressed.   Thursday was one of those days. It was the day after I had spent a good hour on the phone with a lawyer about pursuing a malpractice case (re: husband), and that has been left hanging because the lawyer he recommended I speak to didn’t return my call. … Continue reading →

NYC Photo Journal: Sabarsky to Shiele and The Wurst That Can Happen

Cerebral Jukebox Magazine Posted on October 22, 2014 by Sans SouciJanuary 9, 2017

One of my favorite New York City museums is the lovely gem: The Neue Gallerie/Museum for German and Austrian Art. The museum is in a former townhouse; the museum is located at the Southeast corner of Fifth Avenue and East 86th Street, across from Central Park. But in order to look at and appreciate fine art, one must fill one’s stomach, so on the line one goes for about thirty minutes to get a table at Café Sabarsky on the first floor (my preference) or Café Fledermaus in the basement, where one can soak up the Austrian atmosphere … Continue reading →

Sick KittieS Update 14: And Then There Were Two: 11/27/13

Ampersand, Play’s brother and litter mate, has tummy troubles Ampersand has not been back to a vet since he was a kitten. He’s been healthy all these nine years, but seems to have a familial problem of intestinal blockage. Imagine: he has never been held, picked up, weighed. He is huge and very shy so we just let him be and he comes around in his own time. The vets were able to handle him with no problem. He weighed 16.6 pounds (I put him on a diet when Play got diabetes and he’s lost weight). Thank goodness he had … Continue reading →

Part 15: Running Away

Cerebral Jukebox Magazine Posted on March 11, 2013 by Sans SouciSeptember 8, 2013

Today has been another day of phone calls and emails. I ate lunch in my bathrobe at 3:30 pm, my usual, some carrot-ginger soup for warm comfort and some gluten-free crackers and hummus for crunch factor which helps me get rid of some anxiety and anger. The communications included the following: a pissed-off call to the management of my mother’s assisted living facility to inform him that she is not getting the services she is entitled to: laundry, housekeeping, garbage removal. Some smart-ass workers gave my aide some lip about what they don’t have to do. My job is to … Continue reading →
