Creativity Takes Courage
I finally had some time to go through my camera roll and see what needed to be edited. I came across two photographs of a display in The Jewish Museum, which were taken last March.
The story below is extremely moving and the photograph is even more so. As a collector and creator of charms and charm bracelets, this was something to behold.
Imagine the circumstances.
Imagine the need to create.
Imagine how creativity can keep one going.
Imagine how this was made.
Bracelet. Terezín (Theresienstadt), Czech Republic, 1941-43.
Brass: cut-out; porcelain; cord.
The Jewish Museum, New York, Bequest of Greta Pearlman, JM 86-75a-t
I found a page on the museum’s site that displays close-ups of the charms with a bit more information. There are secret messages…The number 433 reoccurs in many forms. The initials CWK, the hope for luck, the luck of hope. The creator, Greta Perlman, provided a little insight into daily life. The cup, the bowl, the guards. A comb, a clog. Shards of pottery. She worked in the kitchen: spoons, a woman leaning over a pot…but…then there are those doors, and to me they open to ovens of a different kind. Click here for more.
Imagine.

Unbelievable! Something to cherish, a piece of history.
This is amazing! A testament to the strength of the human spirit in the face of horrible adversity. Thank you for sharing Susan.
A real piece of art. It shows exactly how a charm bracelet can keep us company and make reality a prettier place. Thanks for sharing it, Susan.
