Dropping Dimes
Today I was the enforcer …
While scrolling through my facebook newsfeed my eye caught a post from someone who posted from his feed. It seems that someone had set up a facebook page advertising excellent, phony official documents at a good price. This includes PASSPORTS. I “dropped” a couple of dimes about this one. The implications are unfathomable.
And more:
Let’s rewind the clock, shall we?
When my mother returned home to her Florida apartment on Hospice care in March after having been in the hospital for a month, she returned to an apartment full of vermin. Up until the last day in her apartment rats were running behind the walls. They had chewed through metal food tins and one bit the aide’s finger in the middle of the night.
Part of the reason why my mother became ill was that she was in a weakened state: the food was inedible. Her not eating well set off a chain of health issues leading to near-death. She developed pneumonia and was down to seventy pounds.
I reported this assisted living facility to the Health Department, to an ombudsman, to various senior agencies including senior abuse. Inspections were made. The vermin issue was verified. Another state agency came in, AHCA and inspected.
Today the agency assigned to the case, AHCA, Agency for Health Care Administration, called me to update me and for as much information as I could supply. No wonder the aide was called by the director yesterday and was told he picked up her medical bills for the rodent bite. It was probably around the time the woman who called me today to inform me of the latest, cited the facility. I told them my aide SAW a rat under the refrigerator in the main kitchen while picking up my mother’s meals. Imagine?
Then I was informed: the kitchen has been closed! They are also looking into my allegations that the apartments aren’t being maintained: the old dirty crappy carpet and cracked and dented sink would never be replaced in our lifetime. The reason from Mr. Director: “It would set a precedent.”
As far as the rats, Mr. Director told me it couldn’t be all that bad because if it were why didn’t my mother go to The Holiday Inn? How’s that for arrogance? I put in writing as I paid the rent a few months ago that I expected this matter would be taken care of. BINGO! Documented.
The report will be available in about six weeks on Floridahealthfinder.gov. I think it might be time for me to have a little chat with the corporate office. My mom spent over three years in that building and it is a disgrace. It looks nice from the outside but there are many secrets within those walls. It costs a fortune to be abused.
I am so glad you are seeing this through – on top of everything else you have to deal with. How sad that no one else in all this time stepped up to the plate. Keep up the good fight.
I am so glad you are doing the absolute right thing when it comes to this facility. How sad that no one else stepped up to the plate in all this time. Keep up the good fight.
Go get em! Happy your Mom is out of there, they should be shut down.
“It costs a fortune to be abused.” Therein lies the key phrase in this whole sorry saga. You go for it Sooz, it takes guts and determination, and you have more than enough of both to give them a real scare. I think I see a glimpse of the Justice card me dear.
Kudos and kudos. You are a real fighter for citizens’ rights. May many more people follow your example, sister. A disgraceful place with despicable treatment, not to mention the arrogance: they deserve to be put out of business. Basta.
