Anne Frank’s Family: The Extraordinary Story of Where She Came From, Based on More Than 6,000 items
I went to the secret Annex that Ann was living in before she was taken to Bergen Belsen. It was fascinating to be there, after having read her diary and so much else about her.
Anne has been my hero ever since I first read her diary, when I was 11. She has led my way through the difficulties of becoming a teenager, opened my eyes on unbelievable truths, given me hope no matter what life hands out.
I’ll be in Amsterdam soon, and I count on visiting the house where she spent her last two years, if I have the heart of doing so.
i loved teaching anne frank’s diary in a jr.high in “fort apache” the s. bronx. the kids, who were her age, loved the book, especially as it was short pieces they could read and identify with. it was abridged as well for easier reading. about 6 mos. after i taught it one of the quieter girls asked to see me. she said her father didn’t believe the holocaust had happened. she said she told him it had and informed him all about it. i said, maria still waters run deep. i felt i had made a contribution to the next generation. when i visited the anne frank house in amsterdam in ’65, the staircase was almost perpendicular.it has since been redone. i went up but couldn’t get down, fear of heights, couldn’t get started as there were no handrails to hold on as i would descend the first step. my tour group left, another tour group came up, then another but still i remained. i thought i’d relive her time in the annex but finally someone lifted me and put me on the stairs and i was on my way.i read the book in 7th grade myself and have seen the movie and plays about her many times. she believed people were good at heart. i hope i still believe that……
