Go With The Flow: S T R E A M I N G
Up until very recently, I never had a taste of media streaming. Cold, fresh water was what streaming meant to me. Nature. Certainly not media. It seems that many folks are looking into cutting the cord and ditching cable companies. I get it: it took me years to cede to PAY for TV, and the “triple play,” and then you turn around and you are the puppet of the cable company. At least they threw in HBO (works for me) and Showtime (rarely watch it). The fact is there is less and less well-made stuff to watch. There are several
“standards” I can watch over and over, but I am always searching for quality. I will zero in on Public Television (Have you seen Last Tango in Halifax?) re-watch The Big Bang Theory, each episode for the hundredth time, of course Seinfeld. For a while there was a cable station that would play The Loretta Young Show, but then that disappeared. I don’t even see movie channels anymore, come to think of it, I am observing that more and more stations that have been removed.
Within the year I sprang for Amazon Prime. There is an annual fee and then all kinds of perks, the main one being two-day shipping. I received a tap-on-the-shoulder email from Prime telling me I wasn’t making use of the media. I kind of shrugged and decided to figure out how.
So, not too long ago I ended up purchasing the Amazon Fire Stick which was about $34 at the time; it comes with a voice-controlled-Alexa (should you want to use it) remote. The “stick” plugs into the HDMI port so conceivably you can just subscribe to the services/channels you want and do away with being tethered to cable; I’m not there yet.
I’ve seen some fabulous stuff on Amazon. There is always something to watch and once a series is available I can watch at my leisure.
Movies are constantly being added, some were previously on other cable channels and new series are being created.
Some recommendations. I’ll keep adding to the list; some might be on-demand on HBO
