New York City Photo Journal: A Visit To a City Agency: Visual Commentary
A recent visit to a branch of the NYC Department of Transportation, Access-A-Ride, March 4, 2020
This is where the disabled in the borough of Queens go to be evaluated for para transit. (Something we felt we should get as a back-up to driving due to health issues and limitations.) You bring an application, medical documentation and are interviewed and evaluated. You are picked up by a vehicle assigned by this department and returned home, but because they pick you up at least an hour and a half early, you end up waiting hours for return transit, and if you aren’t waiting outside, you can lose your ride home.
This is my documentary: The walls are painted a vibrant blue and those inside appeared to pop against the background; the paint was peeling all over. Curling signs hung from everything …
“Please clean up the mess you make.” Ironic.
I stripped the bright colors and contrasts to show the reality of the needy who are fading into the walls.
The ladies’ “Powder Room, as it was labelled, had no mirror, no paper towels, just a germ blower near the toilet.
Sit on the toilet at your own risk.
Hi Sue,
I was mortified by that sign when Paul and I were there last year. The walls weren’t blue as I recall. They were dingy gray. Maybe a different site with the same sign? Using accessaride is an adventure; you never know what you’re going to get. Hope all your trips are good ones! Love, Your ‘lainie
