NYC Photo Journal: Up On The Roof
Last night I attended a fundraiser-dinner-concert on the magnificent roof of my mother’s building for the elderly which is owned and run by a ministry: the idea is that when the old folks run out of money, they will not be evicted; fundraisers like this will keep them in their homes. In my continuing tale about my mother, the terror of running out of money and subsequent eviction was always the lingering fear. I was more than happy to be there as part of this worthy cause.
Three jazz groups played as the sun went down. And, as the sky darkened the planes coming and going to LaGuardia were like fireflies. But I have to tell you: it got cold (and yes it is still summer in NYC, and a rare one at that). And it got windy. So windy that many of us headed for cover: to the magnificent enclosed portion of the roof, where we finished dinner.
Sorry, no tons of food photos. But there was a beautiful buffet of cold hors d’oeuvres, plates and plates of hot hors d’oeuvres, all manner of great stuff on skewers, and then dinner: a kind of collection of small plates … coconut shrimp, lobster mac and cheese, kobe beef au brioche with caramelized onions. Then, a zabaglione, yin/yang cake, mini pumpkin, pecan, and other pies.
Some of that food came home with me, it was just too much and just too grand. Too, too wonderful.
These fundraising initiatives are a splendid idea. Your mother looks set to stay over there for many years to come. Good luck to her and to you in particular!
Sue, the celebration, sounded fabulous! The music, delicious food, what could be better! I wish your mother the best!
Looks like you can touch Citi Field…Freedom Tower kissing the dusk…summer nights giving way to cool nights…things I really miss about New York. Hope your mom was in her glory, most importantly. Love, Phyllis
