New York City is an island nation of sorts. We forget that so much of the city is surrounded by water and now that its shoreline development and waterfront parks have been getting their due, ferries are popping up. It used to be that “the ferry” meant the Staten Island Ferry. Yes, there always was a ferry to Liberty Island, Ellis Island, Governor’s Island, but beyond that, people can now travel between boroughs, commute to work or just have some time out at sea.
My day began at LIC Flea and Food where food is wonderful and the variety is fabulous. First a burger from the famous Burger Garage. Then I tried a pouding from a South African street food concession. It was a kind of bread pudding in a vanilla custard sauce.
After a break under a tree on a cool bench near the water, it was time for a walk. I ended up on a boat and made it all the way to Governor’s Island and back in time for sunset.
Let’s go!
Lic Flea to Greenpoint, Brooklyn on the East River Ferry.
to North Williamsburg, to South Williamsburg to Brooklyn Bridge Park/DUMBO
to Wall Street/Pier 11, to Governor’s Island
For more information and history of Governor’s Island, please read the article at New York Times and also watch the slideshow.
There and back …
