Friday night we visited friends in Brooklyn in the neighborhood called Fort Greene. In the 1970s, “pioneers” could pick up a brownstone for a song. The neighborhood was pre-gentrified and it was tough and scary and crime-ridden. Now the prices for the same brownstones are tough and scary! Millions! The row of homes I am going to present were built before the Civil War and are landmarks, subject to preservation and strict codes. All renovations must be approved. This album is part of my “travel series.” Again, these are my one-of-a-kind creations. After collecting charms for just a bit my consciousness was awakened to travel charms. I made most of my purchases through ebay where one can find sellers from all over the world. I joined a group of charm collectors on ebay who collect vintage charms. The “Am I blue?” bracelet is a mix of enameled and non-enameled and stone inlay hearts in shades of blue. The bracelet itself is probably from the 1970’s, but the woven mesh and silver work goes well with the charms. Many of the charms are engraved: Ruby, C.T., Dot, B.M., J/r, M.M., Maurice, M.C. Papa, Sarah. The engraving style varies and indicates the age of the piece. The second piece, “Hearts and Flowers” is unique in that the 1970’s chain is double. I have been collecting dichroic glass jewelry for at least 12 years. It is a real attention getter; whenever I wear it, strangers walk up to me and ask what it is. It has a smooth glass surface and embedded in it are many layers of metallics that diffuse light differently creating a shimmering effect and color change when viewed from different angles.
