What’s Old Is Neue Again

Cerebral Jukebox Magazine Posted on June 22, 2014 by Sans SouciJune 24, 2014

The Neue Gallerie is the place for great art and culture in manageable-sized exhibits. The building is a magnificent mansion off 5th Avenue on Museum Mile. If you like Klimt (and who doesn’t?) this is the place to see heavenly, golden portraits. Photography is not permitted so I can’t indulge you first hand. But this is what you’ll find. Neue Galerie New York Museum for German and Austrian Art 1048 Fifth Avenue New York, NY 10028 Tel. +1 (212) 628-6200 Fax +1 (212) 628-8824 The mission of the Neue Galerie New York is to collect, preserve, research, and exhibit … Continue reading →

NYC Photo Journal: Queens Museum: NYC Panorama to Tiffany and Then Some

Cerebral Jukebox Magazine Posted on December 4, 2013 by Sans SouciFebruary 21, 2015

The newly renovated Queens Museum is dazzling. This is the original site of the United Nations, it is the last remaining building of the 1939 World’s Fair which housed a skating rink in the basement and still houses the massive amazing New York City Panorama. The view from the Flushing Meadow Park side is the Unisphere, the symbol of the 1964 World’s Fair.   Click on photos to enlarge. The fascinating, huge installation of Peter Schumann extended through several rooms.     A chiming clock made of guns welded together banged out a cacophony every fifteen minutes, sounding somewhat like … Continue reading →

NYC Photo Journal: ART: Reginald Marsh/Swing Time/Thirties New York

Cerebral Jukebox Magazine Posted on September 7, 2013 by Sans SouciDecember 17, 2013

The Battery   There is a spectacular exhibit of 1930’s art by Reginald Marsh (also, Raphael Soyer, Isabel Bishop). Swing Time, was at the New York Historical Society from June 21, 2013 to September 1, 2013. I was able to see the exhibit on its last day. Reginald Marsh (1898-1954) was an American artist who focused on the mundane, the daily, the profane, the exuberant. He saw the energy and captured it in his interpretation of light by use of color and brush stroke. Some of his work reminds me of the WPA style if there is such a thing. Common … Continue reading →

NYC Photo Journal: An Afternoon at the Metropolitan Museum of Art

Cerebral Jukebox Magazine Posted on August 20, 2013 by Sans SouciJanuary 9, 2017

There is always something to see at The Metropolitan Museum of Art.   Sometimes it is as interesting outside of the building as it is inside. There is always a crowd if people on the stairs, street food, and most likely music and entertainment. And it’s fun. To wit: check out the cool African American dude in the white outfit, playing Hebrew Bar Mitzvah tunes on his sax. Grab a felafel from the food truck and then do the Hora. Or bop along to the group singing the Temptations’ songs. Yep, don’t be self-conscious, it’s New York. Share my day. Click … Continue reading →

Part 3: A Vacation Journal: More Art, More food

Cerebral Jukebox Magazine Posted on July 28, 2013 by Sans SouciJanuary 12, 2014

Monday, July 15, 2013 I find there are people from my area in New York City staying at The Porches Inn; we spend time chatting after breakfast and visit with Sabine the mascat. Everybody loves little “Bean.”   Then off to Williamstown to “The Clark,” The Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute for my annual visit. The Clark is undergoing a major transformation and many paintings are out on world-wide tours, but there was a wonderful exhibit on George Innes and Winslow Homer. A few highlights by Winslow Homer. Homer was a businessman who knew how to parlay his work … Continue reading →

Part 2: A Vacation Journal: Hundertvasser, MoCA, Xu Bing, Phoenix, Amish Chicken

Cerebral Jukebox Magazine Posted on July 24, 2013 by Sans SouciJanuary 12, 2014

Sunday, July 14, 2013 First stop at the Eclipse Mill: Now a home for artists and writers, the mill houses beautiful works and creative workers. I saw a small but excellent exhibit by the artist Hundertvasser, whose art has been featured on postage stamps. They are beautiful modern works that have embedded foil.   Second Stop: Mass MoCA. There are always many works to see of various artists.         But the most incredible exhibit was of the featured artist, Xu Bing, from China, whose works are monumental and criticisms and reflections of society. His animation on the … Continue reading →

Part 1: A Vacation Journal: Food, Felines, Fotography

Cerebral Jukebox Magazine Posted on July 24, 2013 by Sans SouciNovember 12, 2013

Friday, July 12, 2013 As interesting as the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art (Mass MoCA) is, The Porches Inn may be just as fascinating. This area of Massachusetts has long been a mill area with factories lining the rims of canals aiding the shipping of materials in and finished products out. If you read the yellow link embedded above about the history of the building where Mass MoCA is now housed, you will learn about the area, its factories and how so many people depended on them. I have spent many days in the summers since the opening, walking the … Continue reading →

A current exhibit at the Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute (“The Clark”) is Circles of Influence. It displays the intertwined influences between two great painters, Georgia O’Keeffe and Arthur Dove. Please read this fascinating blurb about two 20th century master painters and how they created a new wave of art. 388. Part 4b. Photo Journal: Mass MoCA, a cultural center in the Berkshires

Cerebral Jukebox Magazine Posted on October 23, 2012 by Sans SouciJanuary 14, 2013

The main exhibit is that of Sol Lewitt’s art; “A Wall Drawing Retro-Spective.” These are huge installations which were reproduced by artists and interns by what looks like architectural plans. They are colorful graphics, and the reproductions in such large spaces were an enormous undertaking. A quote that moved me: “The idea is the most important aspect of the work.” I attribute that to the fact that the work was not done by his hand, but by his design. Photos in and around the building. Science as art: the famous upside down growing trees. Artist Natalie Jeremijenko planted trees in … Continue reading →

381. NYC Photo Journal: Long Island City: Part 3: The Socrates Sculpture Garden

Cerebral Jukebox Magazine Posted on October 23, 2012 by Sans SouciJanuary 14, 2013

Our tour continues further up the waterfront at a 4.5 acre park now known as The Socrates Sculpture Garden. Once an illegal dump site, it is now an area that showcases art installations. It was created in 1977 by the sculptor Mark di Suvero to encourage the arts, to expand the culture and to create a space for the harmonious interaction of people and art. The current theme is “State Fair.” The exhibits are whimsical and ironic. The ones with the New York City themes—such as having to squeeze through the subway doors—are just plain urban fun. Notice how the … Continue reading →

379. NYC Photo Journal: Long Island City Part 1/ P.S.1

Cerebral Jukebox Magazine Posted on October 17, 2012 by Sans SouciJanuary 20, 2013

This is an area across the East River from Manhattan on the Queens side. It was once run-down and industrial but as years go by and areas become gentrified the face of the city changes. This area is soon to be unaffordable. I’ll start the tour at P.S. 1. (Public School) P.S. 1 was built in the 1800’s and is no longer used as a school. It has become a contemporary arts center where artists have their own studios in classrooms. P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center is one of the oldest and largest non-profit contemporary art institutions in the United States. … Continue reading →

Then on to The Porches, where we stay each year when we go to North Adams and catch the latest doings at Mass MoCA, the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art. North Adams was a factory town in the 1800’s, built on a canal. I am including history from the website because it will give you not only a background of the museum, but some insight into out country and manufacturing in our earlier years: The history of MASS MoCA’s site spans more than two hundred years of economic, industrial, and architectural development that traces the trajectory of industrialism in New … Continue reading →
