Part 19: “I have no insurance but, I have faith” -Leslie Helene Elder

Cerebral Jukebox Magazine Posted on October 27, 2012 by Sans SouciJanuary 27, 2023

Here I sit on a beautiful afternoon. Shadows of trees cross my neighbor’s window. For some strange reason, birds sing like it’s spring in defiance of the calendar. But I am not happy. Let’s look back a couple of years. A high school classmate found me on classmates.com and then on facebook. Though we didn’t know each other well, the past and its mutual memories were the cement of friendship. Leslie had read about my book and wanted to buy it. Through my book that looks back we began to look forward. Together. You see, Leslie and I learned we … Continue reading →

Part 18: On Relationships: Makeup Meltdown: And Then He Touched Me

Cerebral Jukebox Magazine Posted on October 15, 2012 by Sans SouciJanuary 27, 2023

I love Charles. He is an ebony Adonis with the body of a dancer. He’s thin where a man should be thin and built where a man should be built. He’s so damn sexy, it’s scary. Charles is an old soul, like I am. He doesn’t let on to what he has seen in his native Jamaica but I can read his eyes and he knows mine very well. We are on very intimate terms. Charles touches my face regularly. He is a head makeup artist for Bobbi Brown cosmetics. When Charles greets me I light up. He embraces me … Continue reading →

Part 17: Cancer Survivors’ Day Celebration with Julia Sweeney

Cerebral Jukebox Magazine Posted on October 15, 2012 by Sans SouciJanuary 27, 2023

These next two weeks are biggies for me; as a cancer survivor, I look upon mammograms with trepidation, while trying my best to maintain a positive attitude. This is the month of mammogram, follow-up visit to the breast surgeon, and then the oncologist for blood work. So far, so good. I let out a loooong exhale, literally and figuratively after having the mammogram this past Thursday. It’s been this way since this time of year in 2004 when I was diagnosed with breast cancer and the world spun out of control for me. But today was a happy day, a … Continue reading →

Part 10a On a Formerly Feral Feline Family and the C Word

Cerebral Jukebox Magazine Posted on October 13, 2012 by Sans SouciJanuary 27, 2023

original post 4/7/07/Yahoo Last night at a Passover seder, I was greeted by a dog. It came bounding down the hallway of the apartment building, barking, bonking, raising one helluva reverberating racket. I had made its acquaintance last year, and most likely it didn’t remember me; barking, bonking and raising one helluva racket is what dogs do. All night long, I thought my hostess’s father was playing footsie with me, but it turned out to be the dog. The dog, kept time with its tail knocking against the table as we read the Haggadah. The cat, on the other hand, … Continue reading →

63: Series: Part 1. Spinning At 45 rpm’s: Wake Up Little Susie

Cerebral Jukebox Magazine Posted on September 16, 2012 by Sans SouciOctober 14, 2018

Brighton Beach Baths, Brooklyn, N.Y. the poor man’s riviera; where I spent many summer days   New York City is surrounded by water; many people know it but few think about it. A friend who lives in the Midwest put it together one day and said, “Did you ever go to the beach?” Did I ever go to the beach? Now that’s a loaded question. The beach. In New York the beach was the poor man’s Riviera. Coney Island. Brighton Beach. Manhattan Beach. Riis Park. Jones Beach. Far Rockaway. Fire Island. The Hamptons. Montauk. We are all beach. I didn’t … Continue reading →

64. Series: Part 2: Spinning at 45 rpm’s: Bye, Bye Love

Cerebral Jukebox Magazine Posted on September 15, 2012 by Sans SouciDecember 27, 2016

….. family photos by the late Jack Margulies This is a series, please read in sequence. My father would go his way, we girls would go ours. Into the locker rooms where we kept our stash of beach chairs, suntan lotion, towels. The locker room was a dark maze lit by occasional bare light bulbs; there were rows and rows of wooden lockers secured by locks—with keys or combinations—row upon row, line after line, enough for a little kid to get lost in forever. They were painted with that same old pink or green paint that broke and peeled and … Continue reading →

65. Series: Part 3: Spinning at 45 rpm’s: Beyond The Sea

Cerebral Jukebox Magazine Posted on September 14, 2012 by Sans SouciJanuary 27, 2023

Then the change in light, brightness to dim, our eyes readjusted and we’d pass the snack bar where the teens were pushing and singing.  We’d walk up the concrete hill and face the two doors, one for men one for women.  My mother, sister and I would plod through the locker room in our rubber sandals, our feet wet and sandy, sometimes making a “squeak-squish” sound as we walked.  Piled high with damp, sandy towels, pails, aluminum chairs, the cooler bag, and whatever else we managed to drag along with us, we arrived at the locker where we would park … Continue reading →

66. Series: Part 4: Say It Isn’t So

Cerebral Jukebox Magazine Posted on September 13, 2012 by Sans SouciJanuary 27, 2023

“I was going to lose my right breast. I had cancer. This is my story.”   It starts with changes. 2004 I was completing my 33rd year with the New York City education system.  I was stressed; my position was effectively eliminated, and I didn’t not know what I was coming back to.  I had been out of the classroom for 16 years evaluating and placing students into special education.  I was going to be sent back to the classroom to do remedial work with students. By January I had made peace with the few months that had passed and … Continue reading →

67. Series: Part 5: And It Stoned Me

Cerebral Jukebox Magazine Posted on September 12, 2012 by Sans SouciJanuary 27, 2023

The cookie I received in my goodie bag, months alter, at the Cancer Survivor’s Day Celebration: keynote speaker: Fran Drescher My husband and I went to meet with Dr. Chen to explore options.  She pulled out charts, my husband made notes.  She asked me if I was ok.  I saw her eyes tear up.  My gynecologist came in from down the hall, she teared up.  All I can say was, “don’t worry, everything is going to be ok.” I was consoling my doctors. I’d have to be marked with the needles again, she would do another lumpectomy to get a … Continue reading →

68. Series: Part 6: The Nipplemania Newsletter: Doctor My Eyes

Cerebral Jukebox Magazine Posted on September 11, 2012 by Sans SouciJanuary 27, 2023

On August 27th I started my email publication of “The Nipplemania Newsletter,” and I continued it for my journey.  The only thing I knew to fight my fear with was humor.  It was an animated journal, unfortunately the graphics, animations, and sound effects don’t adequately translate. Just imagine little funny people peeking out from behind the letters, a talking parrot, snoring cat… And so I wrote:      HELLO! and thank you for your subscription to:             We were at the hospital at 6:00 A.M. Click to hear the rooster I was on the table out cold at … Continue reading →

You “cancer awareness walkers” waving my name are fabulous, I thank you! Now for a serious lesson in “do what you think is right for you…” The final biopsy report has returned, and surprise! Aside, in addition to, or coincidental to the diagnosis of “ductal carcinoma in situ,” I had a rare, aggressive form of cancer called Paget’s disease of the nipple. Who knew? 71. Series: Part 9: The Nipplemania Newsletter/Did Ye Get Healed: Important Info

Cerebral Jukebox Magazine Posted on September 8, 2012 by Sans SouciJanuary 27, 2023

Thanks for subscribing On the Mend Issue October 18, 2004   Dearest Nipplemaniacs, . I am drain and stitch free as of last Thursday.  Now I can move without being pulled south by that load I carried for 2 weeks! I was beginning to walk like an orangutan. The next step is a consult with an oncologist. Dr. Chen, the surgeon said she would be very surprised if chemo was recommended, that something like tamoxifen would be more like it. I was reminded by Dr. Keller, the plastic surgeon, that I am “not sick” just “recuperating.” I am allowed to … Continue reading →

Part 10: I Just Want To Thank You: More info and a poem from my friend Jay

Cerebral Jukebox Magazine Posted on September 7, 2012 by Sans SouciJanuary 27, 2023

****I decided to post the comments from the previous blog because they made me realize how many important questions there are and how most people were not cognizant of so much information, or, if they were, a lot can be misunderstood and misconstrued. I also wanted the people who asked questions to be aware of the answers, and other people might need those answers as well.   And I want to thank EVERYONE for coming on this trip with me.   Part 11: Recipe For A Memory Comments (21 total) Frida… Thanks for sharing all the story, with us, … Continue reading →

73: Series: Part 11: Recipe for a Memory

Cerebral Jukebox Magazine Posted on September 6, 2012 by Sans SouciJanuary 27, 2023

Life in the early ’80’s; The High School of Fashion Industries     A classroom in The High School Of Fashion Industries, New York City. This may have been a room used for pattern making or draping. In the early 1980’s I worked at The High School of Fashion Industries in New York City. We were a group of six women and two men who were teachers of the deaf and ran a program within the building. We each taught several major subjects; a licensed teacher of the deaf must be able to teach preschoolers through high school, and high … Continue reading →

74. Series: Part 12: Spending Time With The Nanny

Cerebral Jukebox Magazine Posted on September 5, 2012 by Sans SouciOctober 2, 2022

Fran Drescher, creator and star of the tv sitcom, The Nanny will be the keynote speaker at the Cancer Survivors’ Day Celebration (2007) Tomorrow I will be spending several hours at a Cancer Survivors’ Celebration, and I am looking forward to it, as Fran Drescher will be the keynote speaker.  Fran is a Flushing, New York native who created and starred in the series The Nanny. I watched the series faithfully over the years that it was on; it was hilarious, adorably cute, sexy, precious, and charming. She was a modern day Lucille Ball playing Cinderella and it spoke to … Continue reading →

75. Series: Part 13: Cancer Survivors’ Day Celebration with The Nanny

Cerebral Jukebox Magazine Posted on September 4, 2012 by Sans SouciJanuary 27, 2023

Posted originally in 2007, reposted in 2012 I am uplifted and happy; I attended the Cancer Survivors’ Day Celebration today. I didn’t know what to expect; I thought a few hundred people would attend a brunch in the air conditioned hospital and Fran Drescher would speak. Not. In a huge, and I mean huge tent, 3,000 cancer survivors and family and friends were toasted with champagne, given brunch, flowers, goodies, and raffle gifts. It was exhilarating to be among so many people who, like me, have their own personal stories related to their cancer journey. The … Continue reading →

Part 14: For Poetry Wednesday: Meeting a Goal and The Nipple Song

Cerebral Jukebox Magazine Posted on September 3, 2012 by Sans SouciJanuary 27, 2023

2007: Breast cancer Awareness month continues with good news; I set a goal to raise $1,500+ and I met the goal tonight. I feel great. The 5 mile walk is Sunday, it will be my second one. Those of us walking who have been through the breast cancer “experience” are given pink shirts that say SURVIVOR on the back. We start the walk by cutting through a pink ribbon, we become a pink ribbon from the air as we march in a huge snaking in a 2 1/2 mile loop of people coming and going in the opposite direction. It’s … Continue reading →

77. Series: Part 15: The Walk, 2007

Cerebral Jukebox Magazine Posted on September 2, 2012 by Sans SouciOctober 2, 2019

I’m back. I did the 5 mile walk in an hour and 45 minutes. I raised $1,525. It was hot. I was schvitzed. I’m tired. I am happy to be hot and tired; it means I am alive. Fatigue is a privelege.    Over 6,000 walkers; one could barely move, but having so many supporters along with survivors is energizing. Survivors got hot pink SURVIVOR tee shirts, a pink carnation and a SURVIVOR sash. The most moving part of the walk is the ceremonial breaking through the pink ribbon as the survivors walk through and lead; then everyone falls into … Continue reading →
