Nostalgia: The Automat

Cerebral Jukebox Magazine Posted on July 18, 2022 by Sans SouciJuly 18, 2022

New York City / Philadelphia history. Recently, a documentary was made called, The Automat, which was available in several movie theaters scattered here and there as well as various organizations having private showings online which were not easy for everyone to access. You can now, whether you are an Amazon Prime member or not, access the movie and rent or buy it. It is well worth the few dollars. “A charming, fascinating look at one of the first and most unique restaurant chains in America with Mel Brooks, Carl Reiner, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, and Colin Powell.” Link to Amazon Prime … Continue reading →

Quarantine Pizza: Doh!

Cerebral Jukebox Magazine Posted on May 6, 2020 by Sans SouciMay 6, 2020

My neighbor, Lily, has cooking in her genes and there is rarely a time I don’t smell something divine wafting from her house. She’s been sending over homemade pizza, and in this time of quarantine and pulling inward like turtles, I came across my memories from the early 1980s when I got my Cuisinart food processor and my therapy was  bread baking. So many years have passed since my hands were in dough, sticky and happy, fashioning loaves of my fave bread recipe for “Medieval herb bread.” How did I do it? Where were the recipes? I visited my cookbooks, … Continue reading →

Steller Story Series: A Charmed Life: Book 8: Food!

Cerebral Jukebox Magazine Posted on February 4, 2019 by Sans SouciFebruary 4, 2019

I have been photographing—and re-photographing my collection and designs; so this is a multi-faceted project: one project, the collecting, then the designing, begat another; the photography and presentation. Here is a link to the on-line presentation on Steller. If you are so inclined, download the Steller app. It is lovely the way the pages “turn.” The view is especially impressive on a large screen, as on a tablet. Feel free to comment!       Steller Link: Book 8

My mother recently had her 100th birthday. What did she ask for? K N I S H E S  !! https://spoonuniversity.com/lifestyle/what-is-a-knish Sometimes you just have to indulge in some gustatory nostalgia! A lesson about knishes.     Nearly A Century Of Gabila's Knishes "My grandmother made knishes in her kitchen and my grandfather took them out and put them on a pushcart and sold them on the streets of Manhattan."From humble beginnings nearly a hundred years ago rose Gabila's Knishes — a true New York food icon. Nostalgia: On Baby Ducklings and Rye Bread

Cerebral Jukebox Magazine Posted on August 19, 2017 by Sans SouciAugust 19, 2017

Near the corner of East 14th Street and Avenue B there was an entrance to a store that was recessed from the building line and had two pillars; the façade was covered in red and mirror mosaics, making the entrance a bit hidden from the rest of the store doorways, but it beckoned in its exoticism.   When I pulled the door open I was hit by the odor of sugar and bread. Bakery products were made in the store, not in some central commissary; the smell was magic and this was my version of a Proustian madeleine, evoking my … Continue reading →

Saturday Rant: Something is Rotten in the State of …

Cerebral Jukebox Magazine Posted on March 18, 2017 by Sans SouciMarch 19, 2017

Brazil’s Largest Food Companies Raided in Tainted Meat Scandal Read about it here.     We are all connected… As the world turns. Should we be surprised by corruption in the Brazilian meat-packing industry? We’ve seen it here ourselves many years ago when Upton Sinclair’s book revealed the industry’s atrocities and shocked us into new federal food safety laws. The sad thing is that the tainted meat in Brazil was destined to be the lunches of school children. But, take a look…China and their scandals, some of which include lead paint in toys, melamine poisoned milk and baby formula… … Continue reading →

NYC Photo Journal: I Guess I’ve Been Busy: BKLYN/OHNY/Kings Theatre, East Midwood

Cerebral Jukebox Magazine Posted on October 24, 2015 by Sans SouciJanuary 10, 2017

This is me multitasking: notice how I can take a selfie of my selfies at the same time   So, kids during my hiatus I have been caring for my mother’s issues, caring for my own issues, taking a lot of iPhone photos, doing a little playing: I’ve watched up to Season 5 of Game of Thrones, and everything but the final six or so episodes of Season 7 of Mad Men; I’ll be sorry to see these series end. As for movies; I loved Learning to Drive, I liked 99 Homes, saw a few plays at MTC (Manhattan Theater … Continue reading →

Goodbye to Al

Cerebral Jukebox Magazine Posted on June 3, 2015 by Sans SouciJune 14, 2015

This past Sunday I attended a memorial service for a lovely friend of the family. He passed peacefully in March and had reached the age of 95. He had a broker pack him up, sell his apartment and he moved to an assisted living facility in Connecticut near his sister. I sens that he sensed the end was near. He was a brilliant, kind and gentle man who was active in the New York State Teachers’ Union. He was a high school teacher and held degrees in business.   You can read more about Al here, as well … Continue reading →

NYC Photo Journal: All About Dinner: The 90-Year-Long Christmas Meal

Cerebral Jukebox Magazine Posted on December 20, 2014 by Sans SouciJanuary 8, 2017

A perfect evening began on the pre-Christmas streets of New York City where each block was punctuated by a parade of shopping bags. Throughout were LED globe-like light arrays in different colors: Everything was dressed in lights. This rarely happens: There was a parking spot in front of the restaurant. Andanada. Who knew that the restaurant near the Alice Tully Hall (show to follow dinner) was so superb and had one Michelin Star? Don’t want to sound like Anthony Bourdain, but I had no reservations; still got a table. Let me share this meal with you.   On the house: … Continue reading →

NYC Photo Journal: November: A Month of Back-Blogs (part 1)

Cerebral Jukebox Magazine Posted on November 30, 2014 by Sans SouciJanuary 9, 2017

Looks like I have been missing in action, hasn’t it? It’s been a busy month: celebrations of good things, museum visits, meals out, cultural events, mother issues, the daily migraine … and yes, I got lazy. Most museum exhibits cannot be photographed if there are copyright issues and the material isn’t owned by the museum; this makes it difficult to construct a post with my own work. There are some things I’d like to share but it looks like I will have to rely on internet material. I’ll let you know what is mine and what isn’t. So, … Continue reading →

NYC Photo Journal: From Lost Lake to Vietnam

Cerebral Jukebox Magazine Posted on October 27, 2014 by Sans SouciFebruary 22, 2015

Lost Lake,  a play by David Auburn (Proof, The Columnist) is currently playing at Manhattan Theater Club, and a splendid production it is. It is perfectly cast: two lost souls meet unexpectedly, both trying to get by, both struggling, and it is not until the end that the single black mother who has lost her husband to a terrible accident leaving her with two small children, recognizes her own failings in the man who rented his cabin to her. She saw him as a loser, she had failings, herself, but perhaps there was more to him than was initially obvious. … Continue reading →

NYC Photo Journal: OHNY (Open House New York) Brooklyn Booze to the Dump

Cerebral Jukebox Magazine Posted on October 12, 2014 by Sans SouciJanuary 9, 2017

This was the twelfth annual Open House New York weekend, where New Yorkers get to prowl around, crawl through and visit places in the city that are normally closed to the public. It’s a great way to see the behind the scenes operations of the city, see architects’ and artists’ studios and offices, tour incredible architecture, learn about history, see entrepreneurship in action. I spend a lot of time in Brooklyn and Saturday provided me with entré to: 1. The Brooklyn Navy Yard. Here we learned about some young folks who got together and started a distillary in a beautiful old … Continue reading →

NYC Photo Journal: Part 2: Hot Shoes

Cerebral Jukebox Magazine Posted on September 29, 2014 by Sans SouciJanuary 9, 2017

Peppers were not the only things that were hot; meanwhile, next door at The Brooklyn Museum it’s time for the most incredible shoe exhibit ever. Last year I reported on the Gaultier exhibit. Now for shoes: the history of high heels. Not only did they elevate the rich and aristocracy, they were a necessity to keep their shoes and feet clean and dry. Initially they worn by male royals, then the ladies adopted them from Europe to Asia. The exhibit covered the most incredible specimens: if you ever dreamed of a pair of Manolo Blahniks or Christian Laboutins … Continue reading →

NYC Photo Journal: Part 1: Feelin’ Hot, Hot, Hot!

Cerebral Jukebox Magazine Posted on September 28, 2014 by Sans SouciSeptember 29, 2014

Everything about yesterday was hot: the weather was redolent of August, the one that never really came, the fiery chile peppers, the music, the tasting. The annual Chile Pepper festival is a fun event. There was a massive crowd this year, forming lines, tasting the wares and hanging out on the lawns. First some local color:     Brooklyn, New York, one of the five boroughs of New York City has evidenced that more and more people want organic, healthy food; rooftop city farms are sprouting all over. I believe this is the wave of the future. … Continue reading →

Tripping 2014: Travel Journal: 8. Rail Trail, Toys and Ice Cream

A walk on the rail trail over the Connecticut River. What I saw along the way.     The A to Z Science and Toy Store in Northampton. The way every toy store should be.     Dinner in Northampton at Viva Fresh Pasta.  A candy shop in Thorne’s Marketplace; a mall with great stores in an old building, a walk along the main street, ice cream at Herrell’s, the super moon.         .

Tripping 2014: Photo Journal: 7. Friends and Writers

Cerebral Jukebox Magazine Posted on August 20, 2014 by Sans SouciJanuary 9, 2017

One of my friends from high school lives in the Northampton, MA area and I try to see her when possible. She has the most beautiful little garden on a stone porch outside her kitchen. I didn’t want to leave. She cut me a pristine gardenia and it lasted a week. I guarded it with my life!   On to a visit to Emily Dickinson’s House         Emily was considered an odd ball, and her work was not published until after her death when her sister, Lavinia, promoted it to publishers. She dressed strangely for her … Continue reading →

Tripping 2014: Photo Journal 6: Yiddish, Burgers, Toilets and Art

Cerebral Jukebox Magazine Posted on August 19, 2014 by Sans SouciAugust 20, 2014

The annual visit to the Yiddish Book Center was brief this year due to time constraints, but it was a gorgeous day and perfect for a picnic.   Later, the best burgers evah, at The High Horse Brewery in Amherst was found recommended in a magazine. The staff was wonderful and knowledgable, the brews were excellent and the burgers with bottomless hand cut fries were super. The only problem was that there can be a long wait because the place is packed and it is extremely noisy. Our waitress was a teacher. What does that tell you about teachers’ … Continue reading →

Tripping 2014: Photo Journal 5: Child Labor In The Mills to Williams College Art, Dinner Of Course

Cerebral Jukebox Magazine Posted on August 18, 2014 by Sans SouciJanuary 9, 2017

An exhibit in the town of Adams, Massachusetts, of child mill workers was moving; I have been to several mills that now have exhibits. I have seen photos of the children, babies, who toiled from dawn to night, feeding thread to machines, handling cotton and slipping on oil in their bare fee even in the freezing Winter. They were used because their hands were small and dexterous. Many lost digits and limbs to machines. Finally the child labor laws came into effect. Lewis Hine’s photographic documentation of child labor–child slavery are a testament to our country’s history. Here are photographs of … Continue reading →
