12-23-12: Lulu was adopted today!
My fourth baby was adopted today. She was the sweetest little thing. We were tempted to see if she was still there and take her back. Fate stepped in. Bon chance, Lulu! Have a good life.

Continue reading →My three babies in the back of the photo: just posted from the shelter: Teddy, LuLu and Baby Blue. We miss them. A note to the shelter: I’m so happy they are there! So nice that they have some friends! As for the “new babies,” the mother comes to feed but not as regularly as before. She still looks like she has a pouch on one side but the bulge looks smaller than it did two weeks ago. I am baffled as to her pregnancy state or non-state, and with that puffy winter coat it makes it even more difficult. … Continue reading →
Best wishes for a happy and healthy holiday season, filled with love, beauty and wonder. . . ~Sue Kalish and family
Continue reading →During the night I wondered how my little threesome was fairing at the shelter.I actually peeled myself out of bed at around 9:00. Up until then I would have gotten up at 7:00 am or earlier. This morning I took care of my cats and looked out the back slider to find Sorbet, Princess Blue’s partner, sitting at the edge of my deck waiting for his breakfast. In the rain. Without Princess Blue. Could she have had the new litter? And then what was my choice? Do I have a choice? When I cared for the kittens I would greet … Continue reading →
See the post that goes with this album. Finally found a wonderful shelter with room for my rescues. These photos were taken before we left, our last kitty cuddles.
Continue reading →I have some bittersweet news: after hours on the phone yesterday hearing that shelters were full, getting recorded messages and leaving messages that were never returned, I called a vet’s office I know I got a recommendation for a no-kill shelter in Freeport, Long Island which is a distance from my home. I called in tears with my story: the now three kittens needed to be adopted, I have three of my own, the shelters are full, calls are not returned, and the North Shore Animal League had me on a waiting list and never called me in–and by the … Continue reading →
Yesterday, 12/6/12, was one of the strangest, most stressful days I have ever experienced. It began with a phone call that roused me from a deep sleep at 2:00 am telling me my mother went to the hospital with an ongoing blood pressure issue. I was on the phone continually seeking information, trying to network and make contact with shelters for the three kittens that are left. I was told over and over again that “we are full.” There was hurricane spillover that affected the shelters and it seems that more and more ferals are being trapped and delivered to … Continue reading →
I visited with my little adopted friend at her new home with her “Nonna.” Her adopted mom was at work and we wanted to get in a feeding. Souçi looked so much bigger when she was at my house in the cage, but seeing her hiding in the bathroom and then in a little blanket, reminded us how teeny she is. She was nervous and shaking at first but after giving me a sniff she seemed to recognize me and settled down and purred when held. She’s the baby of the litter.
Continue reading →LuLu, Teddy, Baby Blue…it’s a little quieter today without Souçi …just not the same. She spent her day alone sequestered in the bathroom of her new home. I’ll be visiting her tomorrow with her grandma while her new mother works. In the meantime these three have more room to stretch out. Hallway Soccer Team Notice the ball action. They’re exhausted now. They needed to blow off that steam before sleep.
Continue reading →It’s a bittersweet day; the kittens when taken in, with a few fleas and ringworm, were about five weeks old. Today is Souci’s last day. She is going to be picked up to go to her forever home. Later… A bittersweet day. We’ll miss you, Souçi. I wonder how her siblings will feel. I also wonder how she will feel: surely animals have feelings. And then there were three little kittens… To cheer up the other three we thought it was time to allow them to get some exercise as no infection is visible. Here’s a game of hallway tag. … Continue reading →
They listened to NPR…they watched a little television for the first time…then football. Here they are practicing their moves. This is what kittens do when they aren’t in a fur pile napping and looking innocent; they wreck their cage. I cleaned it 6 times so far today. They just collapsed into 4 piles. I am ready to take a nap. 11-24-12: Post Ruckus This is what kittens look like after they go bonkers for an hour. Have no fear: the cycle will repeat!

Water dish comes out, litter pan comes out and is cleaned. Cats come out one by one and sit in a pan wrapped in little towels. They are bravely taking their medicine. get a dab on the nose, anti-fungal massaged in, placed in triage: the carrier. Beds come out and towel liners are washed. Newspaper liner comes out, cage tray is swept and disinfected. Newspaper liner is replaced: they like The New York … Continue reading →
I just finished feeding my cats and the outside guys. Came up to give the babies their meds. Well, that was a trip. What a system of juggling and glove wearing. Finally got them fed, it’s 2 hours since I am up. Their cage is a mess again, the water keeps getting spilled. But I did what I needed to do. And then I got one of those scintillating scotoma visual migraines…going on 10 minutes… and I have just logged it. Can barely see.
Continue reading →The kittens have returned: they are bigger and heavier and the cage is getting cramped. They now prefer to sleep two to a bed. That doesn’t give any room for water, food and the litter pan.I feel like I am designing a New York studio apartment. We need a loft. They are in their cage lulled to sleep by Mahler. I am assuming they still have some ringworm (which can last for months) and I am being hypervigilant with sprays and gloves and chlorox spray and a huge bottle of Purell. The transition back to a new place and the … Continue reading →
Baffled and sad… I just went through the first kitty album that I made on October 10. There was a 5th kitten, black and white. I never saw all five together so I assumed there were four. I didn’t see the little guy since the mother moved the babies to my neighbor’s shed. He wasn’t in any subsequent photos. I wonder if he is still alive. The kittens are at trapper Dave’s. One has ringworm and all need to be treated and watched, so that’s where they will be for a while. I had them for such a short time … Continue reading →
These feisty little things have been cavorting in my yard, my neighbor’s yard, living in her shed with their mom and visiting my feeding station at whim. They just go right through the fence! David managed to trap the first three babies at one time in a large trap. My neighbor and I watched in disbelief. This is stressful! He used a flea comb and found a few visitors so off to the bathroom they went for a flea bath in the sink. We bundled them up and dried them and deposited them in the large cage David so nicely lent … Continue reading →
