19. Life Is A Journey But This Is A Trip: The Migraine Morph

Cerebral Jukebox Magazine Posted on July 15, 2022 by Sans SouciJuly 15, 2022

From the “I Tried Everything ” department, my last medications for a number of years, were  self-administered injections of aimovig, then Emgality with a co-pay of almost $160/month. They stopped working. The incidents of episodes was creeping back up toward chronic. It was time for a change. I had my first infusion which requires me to go every three months. When I arrived home after the first infusion, I got an ocular migraine. I told myself the medicine needed time to circulate and to give it a chance. That was last Tuesday. It is over a week later and I … Continue reading →

18. Life Is A Journey But This Is A Trip:Makes Me Wanna Holla: Big Pharma Blues

Cerebral Jukebox Magazine Posted on January 28, 2022 by Sans SouciJuly 15, 2022

Think about this: Yesterday I had a talk with my neurologist about an ongoing migraine issue: let’s just say I have tried everything to control an ocular migraine and migraine vertigo challenge for about 10 years. I have been on a med, Emgality, which is a self-administered shot, (co-pay, $150+/mo with insurance), which I think is no longer helping me to the fullest, so the neurologist submitted a request to Emblem Health for a new drug. I received a call a few hours later from the insurance company informing me that my Part D would not cover this … Continue reading →

17. Life Is A Journey But This Is A Trip: Yes, I Still Get Migraines

Cerebral Jukebox Magazine Posted on November 7, 2021 by Sans SouciJuly 14, 2022

Some of you have asked: Yes, I still get migraines. If you recall at the beginning of my posts, they really kicked in about ten years ago when I began caregiving for my mother. However, what I didn’t realize was that even before then, I was having these occasional weird vertigo episodes. What I didn’t know at the time and for some time later, that this kind of vertigo is attributed to migraine, not to a vestibular component. I have been tested about four times and there was never a correlation. At least with a vestibular component, there … Continue reading →

238.→Husband Journey: Big Steps (16. With a Touch of Migraine)

Cerebral Jukebox Magazine Posted on April 24, 2021 by Sans SouciJuly 14, 2022

Robert and his sister Wendy ca. 1953     Here I am after over a week’s hiatus facing an empty page. Empty pages are the black holes that absorb my anxiety, thus, the words begin to fill. As Lila says in Elena Ferrante’s book, My Brilliant Friend, I have a bucket of words in my head and I pull them out. This morning I avoided the bucket of words and fell into the bucket of tears. I don’t do that often but it was necessary. As a migraine sufferer who rarely feels pain but has the other mysterious trappings, I … Continue reading →

15. Life Is A Journey But This Is A Trip: The Nerivio Device Part Deux

Cerebral Jukebox Magazine Posted on January 13, 2020 by Sans SouciJanuary 16, 2020

A few hours after yesterday’s blog was published, I was sitting at my computer and sensed the beginning of an ocular migraine, the third one of the week.  There was a time I was getting them everyday and even several times a day. For years I have been drawing circles around dates on piles of calendars, tracking these events, trying to figure out links, causes, ties of some kind, but nothing felt consistent, it just, well, happened. Happened on its own terms. I have even thought that this condition could be due to a virus that was lingering and … Continue reading →

14. Life Is A Journey, But This is A Trip: An Early Review of Nerivio

Cerebral Jukebox Magazine Posted on January 11, 2020 by Sans SouciJanuary 13, 2020

Here’s the score, kids. I paid $100 for this device which is good for about 10 treatments. How to dispose of it when done is enigma because no one has responded to my query. Anyway … I had my first ocular migraine of the week on Tuesday. The usual: a slight hint of a pop in one eye leads to an eventual blind spot. Here was my chance! Pull the goods out of the box! Stick a device on my arm. Fight with the armband and adjust it over the device to keep it flush to my arm. I … Continue reading →

13. Life Is A Journey But This Is A Trip: Migraine Continues

Cerebral Jukebox Magazine Posted on January 4, 2020 by Sans SouciJanuary 11, 2020

What a typical ocular migraine looks like   Let me begin here as we are about to revisit our old nemesis, the migraine. Here’s a tip: if someone you know gets migraines and mentions they have one, NEVER say, “oh, are you STILL getting those?” Because … ✻ you may get a pie in the face ✻ it shows how much you don’t get it Migraine is an ongoing neurological disorder, it doesn’t go away over night—if ever. It is a hereditary issue where neurological signals get bolluxed, in my case, the occipital lobe, the vision center, has psychedelic trips … Continue reading →

12. Life Is A Journey But This Is A Trip: Still Looking for Relief

Cerebral Jukebox Magazine Posted on September 28, 2019 by Sans SouciJuly 14, 2022

The return of the migraine. I sometimes think that the more a migraine sufferer prevents an episode, the more it comes back to get rid of itself. It is almost like it has to happen for some clearing out of a buildup. Is it electrical impulses? Stress? Does it manifest as anxiety one minute and a headache the next? I know! Let’s blame it on the government! The fires in the Amazon! The changing climate! You know the list. I had never been a big vaper and certainly what I was “vaping” was nothing like what we’ve been … Continue reading →

11. Life is a Journey But This is a Trip: Migraine Re-visit

Cerebral Jukebox Magazine Posted on September 18, 2019 by Sans SouciJanuary 4, 2020

OK, what’s going on here? Things were going very well, I thought. I’ve been taking CBD oil and the Aimovig monthly self-injection since about July 2018. Gradually, the pain headaches subsided and I no longer needed migraine meds or Advil. The visual disturbances diminished in frequency, averaging about five/month, down from almost everyday, sometimes more than once a day. The vertigo stopped! THAT was monumental for me. And then, something happened. Or maybe several things happened. My mother was shoved by an aide, and there was fallout physically and emotionally from that. There are constant things to look after and … Continue reading →

10. Life is a Journey, But This is a Trip: It’s Baaaaack!

Cerebral Jukebox Magazine Posted on September 17, 2019 by Sans SouciSeptember 18, 2019

Here we are back in the Migraine Corral. I was doing well, really well for a time. I began taking Medical Marijuana but was more of a user of CBD oils in hopes of controlling my migraine issues. MIGRAINE. For those who follow my migraine saga, you know this has been a big deal with my health for well over eight years, and though I have always had it, actually since childhood, it morphed over the years into stages. While at work I would often take six extra strength Bufferin to get through the day. The pain headaches were terrible. … Continue reading →

The Weirdness of Migraine: The First Day Of Retrograde Whammy

Cerebral Jukebox Magazine Posted on July 8, 2019 by Sans SouciJuly 8, 2019

A happy Monday to all. I am going to share this with you so you get an idea of what a migraineur experiences.   I was a very young child who had “sinus” and vertigo episodes. I had never-ending re-occurring headaches of debilitating pain. My mother was always told that is was “sinusitis.” No one knew that little kids could get migraine. It accompanied me throughout my school years, during camp, at home, away. But it was not just a headache. It manifested in my gut, as anxiety, and pain and often couldn’t hold food down.   I don’t know … Continue reading →

9. Life is a Journey, But This is a Trip: Reflections on Oils and Meds

Cerebral Jukebox Magazine Posted on April 5, 2019 by Sans SouciSeptember 17, 2019

The Aimovig monthly, self-injection   I just wanted to catch you up on the oil/migraine/Aimovig journey in hopes that it might help someone out there. I have been taking the Aimovig shot once/monthly since last July and have had NONE of those terrible migraine vertigo episodes since. For the most part, any “pain” headaches have been manageable and I have not had to take anything like Advil, or, the prescribed Imitrex until recently. I had played around with the CBD oil dosages in my effort to see what was controlling what: was the Aimovig working better than I thought or … Continue reading →

8. Life is a Journey, But This is a Trip: Less Oil, More Episodes?

Cerebral Jukebox Magazine Posted on February 27, 2019 by Sans SouciApril 5, 2019

Just when I thought, or perhaps naively felt I was on the road to being “cured” of migraine episodes, an attack crept in through the back door and mugged me. Not so fast, you migraine-bully! I am taking the self-injection, newly released drug, Aimovig since July; I believe it has helped. Although my migraine pain previously was not debilitating—pain-wise, but more of an inconvenience that impacted on my functioning that I could manage via an Advil and/or migraine pill, I can report that I have had NO migraine vertigo attacks since using the shot. That’s great! The ocular migraine incidents … Continue reading →

Cerebral Jukebox Magazine Posted on January 23, 2019 by Sans SouciJanuary 23, 2019

The last we spoke, it was a rocky start to The New Year, and Caramel was in a bad way. But she came home and began eating, purring and exploring; I am sure the relief of the draining of that huge cyst was enormous. It was likely pressing on her trachea and vocal cords. She looks so much better and at least we know now what the culprit might be in the future if this returns: if she is strong enough, they’ll likely remove her thyroid. You know you love kitties: here’s a slideshow of improvement. So, while the … Continue reading →

7. Life is a Journey, But This is a Trip: The Magic Oil/Migraine Update

Cerebral Jukebox Magazine Posted on November 10, 2018 by Sans SouciFebruary 27, 2019

Good morning to you, reader and a happy Saturday. Though the face of every newspaper and newscast is enough to make me cringe, I am learning to contain and reframe my anxiety about the state of the world. CBD oil(s) do help. What is even more miraculous is that the migraine issue, though deeply rooted over my lifetime is hanging on, I can happily report improvements. It’s time for an update!       My migraine issues are reflective of what I think are chemical/electric cycles in the brain, a kind of build-up that needs to be discharged. I have … Continue reading →

4. Life Is A Journey, But This Is A Trip: What Goes Around, Goes Around and Around: On Vertigo

Cerebral Jukebox Magazine Posted on September 7, 2018 by Sans SouciSeptember 18, 2018

You’ve read a lot about my health challenges and I am moving closer to answers. I have had this since I was a child: vertigo, the feeling of dizziness, allegedly due to “sinus” but now I am convinced it is part of migraine syndrome. The feeling of spinning is horrible and thankfully, the violent spins I have perceived, are not common, but when they happen they are extremely disconcerting, frightening. They are like nothing I have ever felt before. However, lately, on and off over years, I have been feeling unbalanced. Not quite right. I walk and feel like … Continue reading →

2. Life Is A Journey, But This Is A Trip: Medical Marijuana vs. CBD Oil

Cerebral Jukebox Magazine Posted on August 30, 2018 by Sans SouciSeptember 5, 2018

Where there’s hope vape there’s hope.   The trial process. Mouse-over the photos for the captions. I hope you watched the video I posted in my previous blog. I purchased the Charotte’s Web Plus oil from ThriveMarket.com. I tried a dropper-dose and found it was strong stuff. Mind you, there is no THC in it, this is hemp oil, but I felt it for about 10 hours. I purchased the Charlotte’s Web Vape (pre-loaded) from MedTechHealthCare.com. The vape is strong as well and kicked-in quickly. I am still experimenting with doses and applications, ways and means. I am happy to report that … Continue reading →

1. Life Is A Journey, But This Is A Trip: Medical Marijuana

Cerebral Jukebox Magazine Posted on August 21, 2018 by Sans SouciApril 17, 2023

That is not me, folks. I wouldn’t smoke cigarettes. I am on another journey in hopes of dealing with and managing ocular migraine. There are a couple of things going on so I will fill you in and perhaps you will find some information meaningful and pertinent for you or someone you know. In my quest to obliterate my migraines I have learned a good deal: they are not just headaches. They are unjust headaches which can manifest as: head pain (which, luckily I don’t deal with often and my lifelong headaches, since childhood, have diminished over the years from … Continue reading →

Migraine Redux: The Shape Shifter

Cerebral Jukebox Magazine Posted on June 22, 2018 by Sans SouciJune 22, 2018

I usually don’t post when I get an attack but I think that it might give a non-sufferer an inkling into what happens. Yesterday was a day of freedom. On those days I have the fantasy that I will never have a day of migraine again. Wrong. This morning after breakfast I went to my studio to work on a project. Everything was fine. And then: My eyes wouldn’t converge; The room began to spin and I thought, “OK breathe, you’ve got this. Stare at your finger.” I did. It got worse, I was in free flight from a rocket … Continue reading →

Migraine Relief?

Cerebral Jukebox Magazine Posted on June 20, 2018 by Sans SouciJune 20, 2018

I am sitting here with vision loss on one side: my daily ocular migraine. Call from Cushing Neurological: My headache doctor is putting in for the new drug. Being that I have tried all kinds of drugs, machines, glasses, computer screens, meditation, Chinese herbs (bleh) acupuncture, therapeutic massage, Botox, biofeedback, neurofeedback. I am game. When I was a small child crying in pain with headaches, spinning from vertigo, unable to eat, my mother was told I had a “sinus condition.” Well, I likely did, but migraine was the culprit. I was a 5-year old trying to play and be a … Continue reading →
