298. NYC: Part 1. Brooklyn: Saturday photo album, 9/20/08

Cerebral Jukebox Magazine Posted on October 23, 2012 by Sans SouciJanuary 14, 2013

Two famous Brooklyn, New York food places. Part 1 We started at The Orchard, located at 1367 Coney Island Avenue, because we “follow” the produce. The Orchard is an unusual fruit store in that it carries the finest and most unusual of produce. When the New York Times says that The Orchard is the only store that will carry the rare Indian Blood peach, we go! These peaches are available for 3 weeks… Part of the store’s caché is that owner, Mitchell, insists that the customer taste each fabulous fruit. That closes the deal. No place has anything juicier or … Continue reading →

558. NYC Photo Journal: I Only Have Ice For You

Cerebral Jukebox Magazine Posted on October 20, 2012 by Sans SouciJanuary 2, 2013

Try getting down this driveway (without breaking a hip) and getting to an ice encased car. NYC Schools are open. Good luck… An ice dam formed at the edge of the porch roof; the leaders and gutters are frozen and water is pouring in between the roof and the gutter. 14 CommentsChronological Reverse Threaded reply greenwytch wrote on Feb 2, ’11 slip slidin’ away….. reply bonnymom wrote on Feb 2, ’11 Sue, come look at my icicle pics on my page! reply starfishred wrote on Feb 2, ’11 oy vey reply asolotraveler wrote on Feb 2, ’11 and you are … Continue reading →

556. NYC Photo Journal: Snow More

Cerebral Jukebox Magazine Posted on October 20, 2012 by Sans SouciJanuary 2, 2013

I thought I would update you on the storm from two days ago. This is how the street looks now. Mind you, I had to call my councilman’s office to report that the snow plow had never come down the street. After last month’s fiasco with snow removal, the Mayor is notified directly. The plow came and cleared a bit of the mess and salted. Of course, when we started to dig out, a lot of the snow ended up back in the street. There’s an ice dam of melt at the curb cut, but I couldn’t break through enough … Continue reading →

300. New York City Photo Journal: Manhattan doin’s: 9/21/08

Cerebral Jukebox Magazine Posted on October 20, 2012 by Sans SouciNovember 15, 2012

Sunday, September 21, 2008. We celebrated the first day of Fall in Manhattan. We had theater tickets in hand as we luckily found a parking spot–yes, in Manhattan on a Sunday. To make the city all the more interesting, there was a street fair, and you know what that means; food. And plenty to see and smell. We explored the street fair a little but decided to have lunch in a more quiet nearby area where we could sit and be served. New York City is the Sunday Brunch capital of the world; you’ll find the thousands of restaurants full … Continue reading →

301. Photo journal: checking back on my window view

Cerebral Jukebox Magazine Posted on October 20, 2012 by Sans SouciNovember 15, 2012

Yes, it is technically Autumn. We are going to be getting some heavy rain over the next couple of days. I thought the apple tree was dying, but the garden guy says, “there is still life in it.” Big sigh of relief. There is a large branch on the left that will have to come off as well as others here and there. I thought this was “the end,” of my old, old Golden Russet tree, one of the originals left, perhaps the only one, from an orchard that was here maybe 70-80 years ago. The container garden will soon … Continue reading →

302. Photo Journal: My NYC Lake

Cerebral Jukebox Magazine Posted on October 20, 2012 by Sans SouciNovember 15, 2012

Many people don’t realize that New York City is a city of many neighborhoods spread out among the five boroughs. I live in a “laid-back” area that appears suburban but still has excellent public transit and close proximity to shopping. It’s nice to have the option to walk to everything, and it is also nice to have a lake–yes a lake nearby. It’s 7/10 of a mile around. Great for exercising and meditating. I am intrigued by the ever changing light, reflections, and textures. There’s always a surprise. (click to enlarge each photo) I took my camera and headed for … Continue reading →

305: Shea it isn’t so: Yankee Stadium is gone, now Shea, too….the end of an era.

Cerebral Jukebox Magazine Posted on October 20, 2012 by Sans SouciNovember 8, 2012

Sunday we attended the final Mets game that would ever be held at Shea stadium in Flushing (Queens, New York). It was a moving experience for Mr. Souci who attended the very first Mets game in Shea Stadium in 1964. The Mets played the Marlins and lost. The new Citi Field (seen in Shea’s background), will open next season and the old Shea grounds will revert to a parking lot. Some highlights: You will see the final game played against the Marlins; Marc Antony sang the national anthem; Glenn Close sang too–didn’t recognize her; Mr. Met did his usual thing: … Continue reading →

378. NYC Photo Journal: Flushing Town Hall Jazz series: and a poem for Poetry Wednesday

Cerebral Jukebox Magazine Posted on October 20, 2012 by Sans SouciJanuary 14, 2013

The beautiful, restored Victorian Flushing Town Hall (near the hubbub of Main Street Flushing, not far from Citifield (the replacement for Shea Stadium), is now a cultural hub and the home of jazz. You can follow the Queens Jazz Trail here. If you are a lover of jazz and coming to New York City, order the maps and info from the link above and take the walking tours. The borough of Queens is the home to many of the performers in the newly formed Jazz Orchestra. It is home to Jimmy Heath, and was the home to the late Louis … Continue reading →

377. NYC Photo Journal: A visit to Katz’s: Send a salami to your boy in the army OR I’ll have what she’s having

Cerebral Jukebox Magazine Posted on October 18, 2012 by Sans SouciJanuary 20, 2013

After our visit to the new High Line park last week, we ended the day perfectly; got back in the car and went from the Lower West Side of Manhattan to the Lower East Side of Manhattan. This was the area where many immigrants (Jews, Irish, Italians) began their life in America. They found themselves living in cramped railroad-flat tenements with little air or light, but lots of street life. They shopped form pushcarts below, children played in the streets. When they had the money they moved “uptown” or left Manhattan for The Bronx or Brooklyn. [photos can be viewed … Continue reading →

376. NYC Photo Journal: The High Line: abandoned rail in the sky becomes a park–a little poetry for Wed.

Cerebral Jukebox Magazine Posted on October 17, 2012 by Sans SouciApril 15, 2016

Welcome back to New York City; here’s what’s happening: the first section of the High Line park has opened this week. In the 1930’s an elevated freight rail cut through parts of New York City’s west side as part of the manufacturing industry’s method of getting raw materials from factories and taking the finished products to their destinations. From the brochure:”The High Line delivered meat, milk, produce and raw and manufactured goods into upper floor loading docks of factories and warehouses. The last train ran on the High Line in 1980, carrying a trainload of turkeys.” The High Line sat … Continue reading →

379. NYC Photo Journal: Long Island City Part 1/ P.S.1

Cerebral Jukebox Magazine Posted on October 17, 2012 by Sans SouciJanuary 20, 2013

This is an area across the East River from Manhattan on the Queens side. It was once run-down and industrial but as years go by and areas become gentrified the face of the city changes. This area is soon to be unaffordable. I’ll start the tour at P.S. 1. (Public School) P.S. 1 was built in the 1800’s and is no longer used as a school. It has become a contemporary arts center where artists have their own studios in classrooms. P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center is one of the oldest and largest non-profit contemporary art institutions in the United States. … Continue reading →

380. NYC Photo Journal: Long Island City: Part 2: Gantry State Park

Cerebral Jukebox Magazine Posted on October 17, 2012 by Sans SouciJanuary 20, 2013

Not far from P.S. 1 (part 1 began here)(part 3 continues here) is the new Gantry State Park. The waterfront area just behind the landmark Pepsi-Cola sign now sports gorgeous high rise apartments with waterfront views of Manhattan. Long Island City is a Queens neighborhood that has been built up from a pocket focused on industry. So far, two and a half acres along the East River waterfront are the beginning of this development project. Enjoy the view with me.     8 CommentsChronological Reverse Threaded reply instrumentalpavilion wrote on Jul 13, ’09 Beautiful pics…I was in NYC last week. … Continue reading →

381. NYC Photo Journal: Long Island City: Part 3: The Socrates Sculpture Garden

Cerebral Jukebox Magazine Posted on October 17, 2012 by Sans SouciJanuary 20, 2013

Our tour continues further up the waterfront at a 4.5 acre park now known as The Socrates Sculpture Garden. Once an illegal dump site, it is now an area that showcases art installations. It was created in 1977 by the sculptor Mark di Suvero to encourage the arts, to expand the culture and to create a space for the harmonious interaction of people and art. The current theme is “State Fair.” The exhibits are whimsical and ironic. The ones with the New York City themes—such as having to squeeze through the subway doors—are just plain urban fun. Notice how the … Continue reading →

309. Weekend Photo Journal: Part 1. Brooklyn and Queens, NY

Cerebral Jukebox Magazine Posted on October 16, 2012 by Sans SouciJanuary 20, 2013

New York City hosted hundreds of “open houses” over the weekend. The event was called, “Open House, New York.” One could take advantage of free tours buildings, landmarks, universities, gardens, some of which are normally closed to the public. We decided to visit Pratt Institute, Mr. Souci’s alma mater, (school of architecture) in Brooklyn, NY. There we found new buildings, toured several, and learned about the history of the school which was founded in the 1800’s, visited the incredible library (designed by Tiffany) and the sculpture gardens. Below is the Clinton area of Brooklyn, and like many areas, it is … Continue reading →

310. Week end Photo Journal: Part 2 Long island City: on the waterfront

Cerebral Jukebox Magazine Posted on October 16, 2012 by Sans SouciJanuary 20, 2013

Long Island City is an area of Queens that is in the process of gentrification. Once fairly run-down, this area on the East River is now a goldmine. It is a transit hub; the subway and the Long Island Railroad stop there, just built luxury condos and rentals are sprouting up all over. I thought this was a recession; apparently not here in NYC. And then there is the view. Nothing like it. The Pepsi-Cola sign is a landmark (I am behind it. See middle image below). Look for the 59th Street Bridge beyond ( Second row, third image from … Continue reading →

299. Part 2: NYC: Brooklyn: Saturday photo album, 9/20/08 Pizza as art

Cerebral Jukebox Magazine Posted on October 16, 2012 by Sans SouciJanuary 20, 2013

After purchasing a bag full of sweet treasures at The Orchard, hubby had Di Fara’s pizza on the brain. Di Fara’s is one of New York City’s allegedly best pizza. You have to understand that the city has thousands of pizzerias, but Di Fara’s is one of the inner circle of 3. Far from fancy, it sits on the corner of Avenue J and 15th Street in the Midwood section of Brooklyn. It is here that Domenico De Marco has been making pizza, by hand, for 40 years. All ingredients are imported from Italy; San Marzano tomatoes, spices, cheeses, olive … Continue reading →
