Angels Among Us

Cerebral Jukebox Magazine Posted on June 22, 2020 by Sans SouciJune 23, 2020

We have been confined for three months of quarantine and my husband decided that he had to get a haircut. Mind you, he has neurological issues and very poor balance, he has lost a lot of muscle weight and his gait is unsteady. He has not been out alone nor has he driven in three months. In my mind he should not have gone out. But he is stubborn and overestimates his abilities. I was busy dealing with the issues with my mother. He went for a haircut, in this new world order of masks and gloves and lines. … Continue reading →

New York City Photo Journal: A Visit To a City Agency: Visual Commentary

Cerebral Jukebox Magazine Posted on March 8, 2020 by Sans SouciMarch 8, 2020

A recent visit to a branch of the NYC Department of Transportation, Access-A-Ride, March 4, 2020   This is where the disabled in the borough of Queens go to be evaluated for para transit. (Something we felt we should get as a back-up to driving due to health issues and limitations.) You bring an application, medical documentation and are interviewed and evaluated. You are picked up by a vehicle assigned by this department and returned home, but because they pick you up at least an hour and a half early, you end up waiting hours for return transit, and if … Continue reading →

NYC Photo Journal: The Bounty of Images From A Garden

Cerebral Jukebox Magazine Posted on October 13, 2019 by Sans SouciOctober 13, 2019

My neighbor has a tree that hangs over her backyard. No one has claimed it; it is likely a “volunteer” tree. It has delicate frond-type leaves and yields green baseballs. Now I know that these heavy projectiles are actually black walnuts.       For a few years some iris bulbs took over an area of the garden and choked a little rosebush. I thought it had died. Soon after we removed all the stuff that was sapping it of water and light, it began to bloom and bloom. There’s a lesson there. I brought these lovely roses in this … Continue reading →

Musical Memory and How Jazz Memorializes the Old and New

Cerebral Jukebox Magazine Posted on October 6, 2019 by Sans SouciOctober 6, 2019

The Antonio Hart Quintet: click the link to hear and see Flushing Town Hall, October 5, 2019 I was able to get photos of four of the five band members. (Jerome Gillespie II, drums was not within my line of vision: here is a link to a piece, he is a fabulous young drummer from Houston:    youtube ) This was very generous, interactive, accessible concert. After the end I went up to Antonio, whom I had seen in concert many times with the Queens Jazz Masters at Flushing Town Hall. Antonio is the protegé of jimmy Heath, who is … Continue reading →

A Little Saturday Night Fun in the Nabe

Cerebral Jukebox Magazine Posted on April 7, 2019 by Sans SouciApril 7, 2019

Dinner at Magna: I always feel like I am at my favorite little ristorante in Florence in 1976. Always a great meal. Unfortunately it was interrupted by the need to feed the parking meter and not myself. That’s OK, I don’t have to cook tonight. The portions are more than generous. Taking this straight from a Facebook post: Flushing Town Hall. Flushing, Queens, NY April 6, 2010 Super, fun evening as always. Been coming here forever, getting so popular you can barely find a seat. Taken, edited, constructed on iPXS max at the BACK of the venue! Sound is pretty … Continue reading →

NYC Photo Journal: Street Photography Module

Cerebral Jukebox Magazine Posted on May 21, 2016 by Sans SouciJanuary 9, 2017

7th and 57th Basically anything “out there” is street photography. Always my favorite. I have achieved the ability to “shoot from the hip” (without looking), shooting with my phone looking totally innocuous. Try me. The subway, NYC Nassau County, Long Island     The Neue Gallerie, 5th Avenue at 86th Street     Upper East Side, Manhattan editing process: the front of my car is removed, the items removed from subject’s hand, umbrella handle extended down, street cleaned, filters added. 59th Street Bridge (Ed Koch Bridge) into Manhattan   Buildings, Reflections, More   Driving by a busy street in Manhattan, … Continue reading →

NYC Photo Journal: Holiday Wishes

Cerebral Jukebox Magazine Posted on December 25, 2015 by Sans SouciJanuary 10, 2017

Well, dear friends, I am here to wish you good cheer and good health during the Winter holidays and the months to follow. Pick a holiday, any holiday, and enjoy it. Find its true meaning and let it sparkle within you. Or just go and have a damned good corned beef sandwich on rye. As I sit here writing, I am at the tail-end of a scintillating scotoma. For want of a better description, it is that shape that takes over my vision when I least expect it. I was innocently having my split pea soup when this “thing” … Continue reading →

Review: Constellations: Pole Dancing in the Parallel Universe

Cerebral Jukebox Magazine Posted on December 24, 2014 by Sans SouciFebruary 20, 2015

Last Sunday emanated from a parallel Universe. Show tickets, the decision to drive to a specific train which had a stop near the theater. The transit website said, “no delays.” Arriving at the train proved otherwise, in fact it seems always to prove otherwise when the site indicates no problems. The platform was mobbed and a train was going out of service. As the clock ticks toward the curtain going up I have to calm myself down. It is either traffic or trains, in New York City you picks your poison. Finally an E train is rerouted around the … Continue reading →

An Angel Played the Violin–On Seinfeld?

Cerebral Jukebox Magazine Posted on November 16, 2014 by Sans SouciFebruary 20, 2015

I attended a wonderful concert last night at a local college. I even ran into friends there. The Moscow State Symphony Orchestra was to play and the scheduled violin soloist was the highly esteemed Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg.   She played in the second piece, Max Bruch’s Violin Concerto No 1. The women in the orchestra were garbed in elegant black fabrics: lace, silks. They wore high heels. I mean, these young women were Muscovites and they take pride. But who was the woman who came out to play the solo? She was holding a violin! Where was Nadja? What happened to … Continue reading →

New York City Photo Journal: From Madeline to Sunset

Cerebral Jukebox Magazine Posted on July 28, 2014 by Sans SouciApril 12, 2017

In an old house in Paris, that was covered in vines, lived twelve little girls in two straight lines…the smallest one was Madeline. In addition to the Madeline books, Bemelmans was a prolific writer and wrote for adults. He was involved with working in, decorating and writing about restaurants and bars. Ludwig Bemelmans’ grandson has taken over the Madeline legacy: John Bemelmans Marciano. There is nothing like the original. One of my favorite museums: The New-York Historical Society New-York Historical Society 170 Central Park West at Richard Gilder Way (77th Street) New York, NY 10024 Phone (212) 873-3400   … Continue reading →

Praises for Voelker-Orth Museum

Cerebral Jukebox Magazine Posted on May 22, 2014 by Sans SouciFebruary 21, 2015

The Voelker-Orth house is a gem of a museum and bird sanctuary in Flushing Queens–they even raise bees and make their own honey. This lovely Victorian home was lived in by one family of German immigrants and is over one hundred years old.  “The Voelker Orth Museum, Bird Sanctuary and Victorian Garden, through the experience of an immigrant family’s 1890s home, preserves and interprets the cultural and horticultural heritage of Flushing, Queens and adjacent communities to engage their ever-changing populations.” The recent Maifest … The Maifest welcomed us to Spring after a long, hard winter. NYC Photo Journal: Queens Museum: NYC Panorama to Tiffany and Then Some

Cerebral Jukebox Magazine Posted on December 4, 2013 by Sans SouciFebruary 21, 2015

The newly renovated Queens Museum is dazzling. This is the original site of the United Nations, it is the last remaining building of the 1939 World’s Fair which housed a skating rink in the basement and still houses the massive amazing New York City Panorama. The view from the Flushing Meadow Park side is the Unisphere, the symbol of the 1964 World’s Fair.   Click on photos to enlarge. The fascinating, huge installation of Peter Schumann extended through several rooms.     A chiming clock made of guns welded together banged out a cacophony every fifteen minutes, sounding somewhat like … Continue reading →

NYC Photo Journal: Getting Hives: Just Call Me, “Honey.”

Cerebral Jukebox Magazine Posted on August 19, 2013 by Sans SouciNovember 12, 2013

So, I didn’t run away, I flew away and spent some time at a place I knew nothing about, a place ensconced in the neighborhood where my mother now lives, Flushing, Queens: The Voelker Orth Museum, is also a bird sanctuary and Victorian Garden. From the website: __________________________________________________________________________________________________ From Immigrant Home to Neighborhood Museum 10th Anniversary Exhibition August 24 – November 24, 2013 Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday, 1-4pm From Immigrant Home to Neighborhood Museum takes a look at the transformation of the property from the late 19th century through the restoration of the house and opening of the Voelker Orth … Continue reading →

NYC Photo Journal: Louis, Louis! Hot Jazz!

Cerebral Jukebox Magazine Posted on July 23, 2013 by Sans SouciFebruary 21, 2015

Louis Armstrong’s favorite food was rice and beans. That’s what is served along with hot jazz in the cool garden, a summer concert series held under the trees in Louis’ yard in Corona, Queens. There is a fascinating house tour, films and audio tracks that illustrate how remarkable this man was and how he lives on. Louis’ birthday party was celebrated on July 4th with the usual rice and beans, lemonade and a celebratory birthday cake. Bria’s Hot Five with Bria Skonberg was the billed show. This is one amazing young lady.

310. Week end Photo Journal: Part 2: Long Island City: on the waterfront

Cerebral Jukebox Magazine Posted on October 23, 2012 by Sans SouciJanuary 14, 2013

Long Island City is an area of Queens that is in the process of gentrification. Once fairly run-down, this area on the East River is now a goldmine. It is a transit hub; the subway and the Long Island Railroad stop there, just built luxury condos and rentals are sprouting up all over. I thought this was a recession; apparently not here in NYC. And then there is the view. Nothing like it. The Pepsi-Cola sign is a landmark. (I am behind it.) Look for the 59th Street Bridge beyond. Feelin’ Groovy, yet?

309. Weekend Photo Journal: Part 1. Brooklyn and Queens, NY

Cerebral Jukebox Magazine Posted on October 23, 2012 by Sans SouciNovember 15, 2012

New York City hosted hundreds of “open houses” over the weekend. The event was called, “Open House, New York.” One could take advantage of free tours buildings, landmarks, universities, gardens, some of which are normally closed to the public. We decided to visit Pratt Institute, Mr. Souci’s alma mater, (school of architecture) in Brooklyn, NY. There we found new buildings, toured several, and learned about the history of the school which was founded in the 1800’s, visited the incredible library (designed by Tiffany) and the sculpture gardens. Photos: a doggy waits for his masters to come out of the tour; … Continue reading →
