NYC Photo Journal: Part 2: Hot Shoes

Cerebral Jukebox Magazine Posted on September 29, 2014 by Sans SouciJanuary 9, 2017

Peppers were not the only things that were hot; meanwhile, next door at The Brooklyn Museum it’s time for the most incredible shoe exhibit ever. Last year I reported on the Gaultier exhibit. Now for shoes: the history of high heels. Not only did they elevate the rich and aristocracy, they were a necessity to keep their shoes and feet clean and dry. Initially they worn by male royals, then the ladies adopted them from Europe to Asia. The exhibit covered the most incredible specimens: if you ever dreamed of a pair of Manolo Blahniks or Christian Laboutins … Continue reading →

NYC Photo Journal: From 1887 to Modern Times

Cerebral Jukebox Magazine Posted on September 23, 2014 by Sans SouciFebruary 20, 2015

Saturday, September 20, 2014   but …   eventually I was at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York, for a luncheon, a celebration of alumni and tours of buildings. There had been a terrible fire in a building and the subsequent reconstruction of it was wonderful. A few photos. The fun and interesting thing about this well-renown institution of art and architecture that was founded in 1887, is that a myriad of stray cats live in the boiler room. The cats are cared for, fed, taken to the vet, and adored by students and faculty members, alike. They roam the … Continue reading →

NYC History: Avery Corman: “My Old Neighborhood”

Cerebral Jukebox Magazine Posted on September 21, 2014 by Sans SouciFebruary 20, 2015

Author, Avery Corman’s video is a touching look at growing up in the Bronx. Although I grew up in Lower Manhattan, I did live in the Bronx for about seven years. The denizens of each borough have borough-specific memories, yet somehow, the memories are the same. The food, the smells, the buildings, the sounds all echo from place to place. They will forever be different and forever the same. I am drawn to this video even though is is “before my time” and slightly out of phase with my life, but I know the Bronx. I remember the grand movie … Continue reading →

The Country House in Manhattan

Cerebral Jukebox Magazine Posted on September 14, 2014 by Sans SouciFebruary 21, 2015

To Manhattan to the theater … to see “The Country House” by Donald Margulies.   First, the journey across the 59th Street Bridge, aka, the Queensborough Bridge, aka, The Ed Koch Queensborough Bridge. This will give you folks who are not familiar with New York City a feel for the expanse. Going into Manhattan, the center of the Universe. Can you find the tram?

Best crop evah! Just getting started.   Kitties adjusting to loss of their family member.   Doctor’s office again … a typical wait for this neurologist is more than five hours. Book the appointment and call in to see how long the wait is. Wait at home. On Stage: Heaven and Hell: The Passenger

Cerebral Jukebox Magazine Posted on July 14, 2014 by Sans SouciFebruary 20, 2015

The Passenger An opera by the late Mieczyslaw Weinberg based on a radio play by Zofia Posmysz, libretto by Alexander Medvedev. As part of New York City’s Lincoln Center festival, the opera was performed by the Houston Grand Opera Orchestra, conducted by Patrick Summers, staged at the Park Avenue Armory, a grand venue. The Passenger is about heaven and hell. In heaven, one is aboard a ship bound for Brazil. Passengers walk the deck, drink, dance. All is white: the people, their clothes, the band, their instruments. All is pure until it is divulged … Walter is a German … Continue reading →

Back To the Future For Me

Cerebral Jukebox Magazine Posted on June 21, 2014 by Sans SouciFebruary 20, 2015

I thought I’d stop by between migraines and visits to doctors. I had check-ups and annuals from head to toe, a visit for virtually every body part over the last week, plus a tweak at the orthodontist; the week ended at the office of a new acupuncturist.   I spent two visits over two days at an ear, nose and throat specialist who specializes in vertigo at the request of my internist. After hours at Dr. S’s office including a full battery of tests (the final one launched an ocular migraine) the diagnosis was: “everything is normal.” Never mind … Continue reading →

Carry On

Cerebral Jukebox Magazine Posted on May 21, 2014 by Sans SouciFebruary 20, 2015

Next stop on the migraine trail was, at the recommendation of the neurologist, a visit to an opthal-neurologist who declared my optic nerves were fine. He was a busy doctor of stature, serious, maybe too serious. I wanted him to smile, to make light of it all, to tell me he had the key. He didn’t. No smile, no key. A healthy optic nerve is a good thing, we know that. So the migraine story continues and hits the wall. There are two kinds of ocular migraines going on and there is from what I can see, read, learn about: … Continue reading →

1964, When All Was Fair

Cerebral Jukebox Magazine Posted on April 28, 2014 by Sans SouciFebruary 21, 2015

Welcome to the past: The fiftieth anniversary of the World’s Fair is the background for memories that I will share in a subsequent post. I was a High School student at the time, and the 1964 World’s Fair, housed in Flushing Meadows Park in Queens, was the thrill of every visitor. The fair’s theme was “Peace Through Understanding,” its icon was a 12-story steel model of the Earth called the “Unisphere,” and it ran for two six-month seasons, April 22 – October 18, 1964 and April 21 – October 17, 1965. Admission price for adults (13 and older) … Continue reading →

On Bagels and On Selling Children

Cerebral Jukebox Magazine Posted on March 5, 2014 by Sans SouciFebruary 20, 2015

I thank my friend Joyce, who was the source of the following two articles, which moved me in different ways. The first is the story of bagel making in New York City. If you are from NYC–especially Brooklyn, you’re gonna LOVE this. If you are not from NYC, you’ll get an education. This is what real bagels are all about: The boil>bake process with NYC WATER. The bagel originated in POLAND and is considered to have Jewish roots. The Wiki page on bagels is fairly good.         I hope that left you sated and happy. … Continue reading →

Sick KittieS Update 14: And Then There Were Two: 11/27/13

Cerebral Jukebox Magazine Posted on November 28, 2013 by Sans SouciFebruary 21, 2015

Ampersand, Play’s brother and litter mate, has tummy troubles Ampersand has not been back to a vet since he was a kitten. He’s been healthy all these nine years, but seems to have a familial problem of intestinal blockage. Imagine: he has never been held, picked up, weighed. He is huge and very shy so we just let him be and he comes around in his own time. The vets were able to handle him with no problem. He weighed 16.6 pounds (I put him on a diet when Play got diabetes and he’s lost weight). Thank goodness he had … Continue reading →

To Your Health: Pits, Seeds, Rinds, Pulp, Laughs, and Coconuts

Cerebral Jukebox Magazine Posted on October 22, 2013 by Sans SouciFebruary 20, 2015

I decided it was time I jumped on the juicing bandwagon. I used to eat a lot more fruits and vegetables and just don’t have it in me to chow down a ton anymore. My mother’s aide asked for a juicer so I bought her one.  My mother decided she wasn’t interested in what it could do. When the aide returned to Florida I took the juicer and decided it was time to turn over a new leaf. Or fruit or veg. I had purchased what I later found out was a “young coconut” from the local HMart. … Continue reading →
