277. Songs for Saturday, Art for Sunday:Travel: Part 6: Williamstown: The Clark Institute: Art and Music

Cerebral Jukebox Magazine Posted on October 14, 2012 by Sans SouciJanuary 21, 2013

In my pictures there is no cleverness, no brush marks, nothing to astonish or bewilder, but simply a gradual, more perfect growth of beauty–it is this beauty my canvases reveal, not the way it is obtained. ~James McNeill Whistler “When considering modernist painting in the decades around 1900, we generally think of expressive, virtuosic brushwork that clearly reveals the presence of the artist. Yet its quieter and formally more subtle style of painting ran throughout the period, and this is the focus of Like Breath on Glass: Whistler, Inness, and the Art of Painting Softly. “Paint should not be applied … Continue reading →

208: Poetry: New Series: Couples: 1. Tanglewood

Cerebral Jukebox Magazine Posted on September 24, 2012 by Sans SouciNovember 2, 2012

This is the beginning of a series called “Couples,” a topic that intrigues me, based on observations. 1. Tanglewood, one evening in July, 2006**** © 7/02 He had that Hollywood look; the tan, the lined, outdoor face that said, “maybe I’m an actor.”  In fact, he reminded me of Patrick Swayze, in Dirty Dancing; He wore a tight tee shirt that was slightly faded in color, like army drabs, but on closer inspection I could see that there was a pattern of swirls of blues and greens and mottled browns, like marble.  He bent his dark and silver head of … Continue reading →

Poem/Prayer and Max Bruch: Kol Nidrei for Yom Kippur

Cerebral Jukebox Magazine Posted on September 12, 2012 by Sans SouciDecember 30, 2016

I took this beautiful prayer/poem from my sister, Laurita’s page; she lovingly posted it, in dedication to me. It is in the Hebrew prayer book for Yom Kippur services. The holiest day of the year for Jewish people is this day, The Day of Atonement, which began Friday evening at sundown and ended this evening at sundown. Birth is a beginning, And death a destination. And life is a journey, From childhood to maturity, And youth to age. From innocence to awareness, And ignorance to knowing, From foolishness to descretion, And then, perhaps, to wisdom, From weakness to strength, Or … Continue reading →

191. Song Saturday: 3/22/08: Mahler, symph no. 5: Gustavo Dudamel Conducts The Simón Bolivar Youth Orchestra

Cerebral Jukebox Magazine Posted on May 19, 2012 by Sans SouciFebruary 21, 2015

True class: South America’s lightning conductor . . . what I experienced was sensational. His name is Gustavo Dudamel . . . he produced enough electricity to light up Birmingham . . . a young man with boundless talent, deeply in love, and the world at his feet.” The Times; (London), February 2007 Here’s a change of pace for Sans Souci of the rock & roll hearted.  What most people may not know about me is that I live in a household with thousands of classical music CD’s, and that my husband, son, and I are actual card-carrying members of … Continue reading →

228. From Mahler x 3, to postal poop, to getting screwed, to lightening bolts…

Cerebral Jukebox Magazine Posted on May 18, 2012 by Sans SouciDecember 15, 2012

This has been a strange week, indeed.  Bear with me and let me do my stream of consciousness. 1. It started with Tuesday Several people have asked about the Mahler concert (Mahler’s 8th “Symphony of a Thousand”); it was an experience.  Getting up to the balcony at good old Carnegie Hall was like an upwards trek in the outback.  Elevator? Who needs the elevator, we are already in the crowd pushing up the stairs. The equivalent of 8 flights. Or more.  I am still panting.  Then once up, it’s straight down to the seats.  I felt I needed a reverse … Continue reading →
