2d. Garden: Flowers, Bugs & Butterflies, 2020: Transformation to Butterfly

Cerebral Jukebox Magazine Posted on July 21, 2020 by Sans SouciAugust 31, 2020

And then one day, and sometimes for many days, you find a treasure, usually in the morning; sometimes several treasures. One day 4 pupae eclosed.   So far this season: We were able to raise and release 20 butterflies of about 23 since June. One little caterpillar just couldn’t make it. Two pupae remained behind and never “eclosed.” Here is a compendium of moments   Let’s go to the movies. The mother butterfly looks for a place to lay her eggs. Once she lays them, on parsley or dill, that is what they will eat. No mixing and matching. I … Continue reading →

A Little Saturday Night Fun in the Nabe

Cerebral Jukebox Magazine Posted on April 7, 2019 by Sans SouciApril 7, 2019

Dinner at Magna: I always feel like I am at my favorite little ristorante in Florence in 1976. Always a great meal. Unfortunately it was interrupted by the need to feed the parking meter and not myself. That’s OK, I don’t have to cook tonight. The portions are more than generous. Taking this straight from a Facebook post: Flushing Town Hall. Flushing, Queens, NY April 6, 2010 Super, fun evening as always. Been coming here forever, getting so popular you can barely find a seat. Taken, edited, constructed on iPXS max at the BACK of the venue! Sound is pretty … Continue reading →

1. Life Is A Journey, But This Is A Trip: Medical Marijuana

Cerebral Jukebox Magazine Posted on August 21, 2018 by Sans SouciApril 17, 2023

That is not me, folks. I wouldn’t smoke cigarettes. I am on another journey in hopes of dealing with and managing ocular migraine. There are a couple of things going on so I will fill you in and perhaps you will find some information meaningful and pertinent for you or someone you know. In my quest to obliterate my migraines I have learned a good deal: they are not just headaches. They are unjust headaches which can manifest as: head pain (which, luckily I don’t deal with often and my lifelong headaches, since childhood, have diminished over the years from … Continue reading →

Song In My Head Tuesday: The Band

Cerebral Jukebox Magazine Posted on November 29, 2016 by Sans SouciDecember 15, 2016

I switched on PBS the other night and fell into some nostalgic reverie. After that I have been unable to get the song, “It Makes No Difference” out of my head. (see video at 10:42) Call it post-election-funk, or disbelief each time I read the newspaper at the state of this world. I do believe we are going through a strange period in history and I do believe that even knowing and understanding history is not changing anything in the present. So, I pack my mental bags and leave to my sci-fi fantasy world which includes: Westworld, Orphan Black, Game … Continue reading →

NYC Photo Journal: I Guess I’ve Been Busy: BKLYN/OHNY/Kings Theatre, East Midwood

Cerebral Jukebox Magazine Posted on October 24, 2015 by Sans SouciJanuary 10, 2017

This is me multitasking: notice how I can take a selfie of my selfies at the same time   So, kids during my hiatus I have been caring for my mother’s issues, caring for my own issues, taking a lot of iPhone photos, doing a little playing: I’ve watched up to Season 5 of Game of Thrones, and everything but the final six or so episodes of Season 7 of Mad Men; I’ll be sorry to see these series end. As for movies; I loved Learning to Drive, I liked 99 Homes, saw a few plays at MTC (Manhattan Theater … Continue reading →

Travel Photo Journal 8: Amherst: The Yiddish Book Center: Molly Picon to Kutshers

Cerebral Jukebox Magazine Posted on August 31, 2015 by Sans SouciJanuary 10, 2017

The Yiddish Book Center is on the Hampshire College Campus. This is another place I have written about over the years; Aaron Lansky, its founder, made it his personal mission to save every Yiddish book he could, and he has, over decades, done so. The books have been rescued from all over the world and are in the process of being translated and uploaded to the internet. There is always an interesting exhibit, and the collections on Jewish culture and Yiddish authors are fascinating.     The Current major exhibit: Photography by Marisa Scheinfeld: Echoes … Continue reading →

Travel Photo Journal 4: North Adams: Mass MoCA: The Old Boiler to the Misbegotten

Cerebral Jukebox Magazine Posted on August 26, 2015 by Sans SouciSeptember 22, 2015

I’ve created several posts about North Adams and here they continue. On another day there was a visit to the Eclipse Mill. Old mills on canals are often being converted to artists’ living quarters/work space/shop space. I’ve made a couple of friends over the years. It’s important to support the people who create art. The thought of a reasonable loft space is very tempting!   Back to Mass MoCA. In the old boiler building from the Sprague  Electric Company there is an audio installation by Stephen Vitiello, All Those Vanished Engines. There are haunting voices of those from the time … Continue reading →

Travel Photo Journal 2: North Adams: Mass MoCA

Cerebral Jukebox Magazine Posted on August 24, 2015 by Sans SouciAugust 25, 2015

Approaching the entrance to Mass MoCA in the building with the clock tower; the buildings through the front gate also house business, shops and a restaurant.  It took two days to plow through the galleries. I’ll just touch on some of the work. Art in the lot: SuttonBeresCuller: Big Top Grand Stand   The building is a conglomerate of huge spaces that have been divided into smaller units. Above, looking through the main level, with back to gallery entrance (that expands to three floors) toward the shop and café beyond. To the left is the entrance, to the right are … Continue reading →

Swiss Chard and Garbanzos: NYCTV.gov: Frankie Cooks

This is a lovely, healthy and quick recipe I found on NYCTV. The rainbow chard has multicolored stems and is beautiful. I found it close to home, luckily, at a local farm. It’s a calcium-rich food. Try it and enjoy.

Friday Flu-Fluff

Cerebral Jukebox Magazine Posted on January 9, 2015 by Sans SouciFebruary 20, 2015

We can all use some uplifting on this NYC flu-ridden Friday. Here’s a goodie bag that I filled during the week with things that made me smile and ponder.       It’s time to dance! Love these two. Who says a big guy can’t dance?   Doggie at the hair salon       Peeping Tom   I would like a little platypus, please. Thanks. (Surely they are part cat)   I love the Christchurch seniors. Waving to New Zealand. Also wouldn’t mind living in such a happy place.   And another …     Have a glass of water … Continue reading →

Friday Fluff: Are Some Things Meant to Be? The Bashert Factor

Cerebral Jukebox Magazine Posted on December 19, 2014 by Sans SouciDecember 20, 2014

Is it serendipity? Telepathy? Coincidence? I often have, as I am sure you do, situations where it’s gotta be more than a coincidence … you run into someone you were just thinking about, a letter arrives, an email, a call from someone who has been on your mind … Last night I heard from someone I had contacted months ago and left a message. The call was returned last night, a few hours after a holiday card was mailed to her saying: I called and left a message, I hope you are well. I knew in my heart of hearts … Continue reading →

Sign Of The Times

Cerebral Jukebox Magazine Posted on December 3, 2014 by Sans SouciDecember 3, 2014

My past, my students. Teachers will understand, teachers of the deaf will understand better. I came across an article in today’s The New York Times. In the 1980’s I taught in a program for the deaf at The High School of Fashion Industries in Manhattan. I recognized faces in this article. Faces of former students who at that time were learning a trade along with academics. At graduation they were 21 years old. I was in my 30’s. I see at least one of my former students in a photo of the choir and the video. The woman in the … Continue reading →

An Angel Played the Violin–On Seinfeld?

Cerebral Jukebox Magazine Posted on November 16, 2014 by Sans SouciFebruary 20, 2015

I attended a wonderful concert last night at a local college. I even ran into friends there. The Moscow State Symphony Orchestra was to play and the scheduled violin soloist was the highly esteemed Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg.   She played in the second piece, Max Bruch’s Violin Concerto No 1. The women in the orchestra were garbed in elegant black fabrics: lace, silks. They wore high heels. I mean, these young women were Muscovites and they take pride. But who was the woman who came out to play the solo? She was holding a violin! Where was Nadja? What happened to … Continue reading →

NYC Photo Journal: Halloween 2014: Rob and Dorit Thereminize at Joe’s Pub

Cerebral Jukebox Magazine Posted on November 1, 2014 by Sans SouciFebruary 21, 2015

Joe’s Pub is a nightclub/bar/theater venue for New Yorkers of all ages. Halloween night is special: out come the theremins for a little spookiness to add to your dinner. Meanwhile, outside, and a few blocks down, you have the world renown Halloween parade, and chances are while walking the streets you’ll see a lot of fake blood and some very interesting costumes. If they are costumes. After all, this is the Village. (Greenwich Village)   Meanwhile, inside, the usually great burgers are being served (it was a busy night and many orders were incorrect), but (cousin) Rob Schwimmer and Dorit … Continue reading →

NYC Photo Journal: From Lost Lake to Vietnam

Cerebral Jukebox Magazine Posted on October 27, 2014 by Sans SouciFebruary 22, 2015

Lost Lake,  a play by David Auburn (Proof, The Columnist) is currently playing at Manhattan Theater Club, and a splendid production it is. It is perfectly cast: two lost souls meet unexpectedly, both trying to get by, both struggling, and it is not until the end that the single black mother who has lost her husband to a terrible accident leaving her with two small children, recognizes her own failings in the man who rented his cabin to her. She saw him as a loser, she had failings, herself, but perhaps there was more to him than was initially obvious. … Continue reading →

Scenes From A Marriage, in Triplicate

Cerebral Jukebox Magazine Posted on October 6, 2014 by Sans SouciFebruary 20, 2015

In 1974, Roger Ebert called  Ingmar Bergman’s Scenes from A Marriage  “one of the truest, most luminous love stories ever made.” It makes us re-examine the nomenclature of love. “His married couple are Swedish upper-middle-class. He is a professor, she is a lawyer specializing in family problems (for which, read divorce). They have two daughters, who remain off screen. They are intelligent, independent. She truly believes their marriage is a happy one (although she doesn’t much enjoy sex). One evening, he comes to their summer cottage and confesses that he has gone and fallen in love with someone else. There is … Continue reading →
